Wonderful Album
I'm late to the game with this album, but it doesn't get much better than this.I got turned on to the Avett Brothers after seeing them live this summer, and after getting "Live and Die" stuck in my head, I decided to buy this album. Having listened to most of their others, I think this is their best. It's right where they start to go from wild and energetic bluegrass to a more polished, refined folk sound. After this album, the Avett's seem to have gotten a bit too mellow, so this is the sweet spot. The songs themselves are absolutely brilliant. I think of them as an American folk version of the Beatles with the memorable memories and strong harmonies. From the opener Die Die Die through The Ballad of Love and Hate, it's a great stretch of songs that range from poppy and upbeat to emotional. It drops a bit then picks up with the amazing All My Mistakes through I Would be Sad, another great stretch of songs. The last few drop off a bit more but that's fine.Sonically, the album is a bit raw and has a nice balance of crispness to a lively sound. Probably my favorite of the albums of theirs I've heard, where the early ones are too raw and unpolished and the newer ones are a bit too perfect (although the Carpenter has a wonderful mix, I and Love and You was a bit dark and dead for my tastes). Maybe this is because my first exposure to them was the live show.Typically I'd only give five stars for an album that I feel is "perfect" all the way through, but the quality of the songs are so high than they transcend the lesser tunes. I've recommended this album to many people this year and many fell in love with it as strong as I have.

Good album, poor vinyl quality control
Great album but quality control was horrible. - Both records are warped - Torn labels - Tear on outer sleeve binding - All surfaces have record impressions including all three parts of the outer sleeve (trifold) and both inner sleeves indicating the beginng of ring wear.- inner sleeves have split side seemsThese issues should not be present on a new record. Very disappointed.

Not only one of their best...
This album is one of THE best. This album really speaks to me. The Avett Brothers are definitely a love-song group, however they are anything but traditional. It's impossible to nail them to a genre, they cross many in their path to success; rock, alt-country, bluegrass, funk... An aptly named record because they bring emotion to the listener like no other. I can say I've never met anyone I liked that didn't like the Avett Brothers. Their attitudes and constant elation are contagious. There are very few albums you can toss in your car's cd player and not realize until a week later that you're still listening to the same album. That's this album. That used to happen to me with Led Zeppelin IV all the time. Not saying this album is Led Zeppelin IV, however if you give this album a chance it will not disappoint. Love the Avetts!

You need this album.
This is a fine pressing. Another album from the Avett Brothers (I and Love and You) left a bit to be desired as far as sound quality goes, but this record is beautifully done. If you're a fan of the Avett Brothers you need this album.

Sounds amazing depending on player
Originally bought this when I had a Victrola suitcase player and it was terrible. I was heartbroken as this was one of my favorite albums. I eventually upgraded to an audiotechnica player with edifier speakers and tried Emotionalism again and it was a massive difference! I've seen a lot of reviews calling it a bad pressing but I've found it depends on the quality of the player.

quirky folk/alt country
quirkier than I and Love and You - this shows the Brothers trying to stretch the possibilities of the folk format. Best songs : Die Die Die, Shame, All My Mistakes, and Living of Love

Just an amazing album
I am definitely a latecomer to the Avett Brothers and this was my first purchase of theirs. Their music is exactly what I have been looking for- a somewhat indescribable combination of folk, Americana, bluegrass, country, pop, and punk. I love the choice of instruments, thoughtful lyrics, great harmonies, melodic tunes, and the overall effect which is stunning. I put them in the same broad category as Mumford and Sons and Lumineers but with more musical variety. Some of their songs are strongly punk, bluegrass, pop, or country, but most exist in a space suspended at the intersection of these musical genres. After trying to list my favorite songs on this album, I realized that I love all of the songs. Since buying this album, I have created an Avett Brothers Pandora station, bought Mignonette and put all of their other albums in my wish list. I am not sure I have ever been so excited about a musical discovery.

AVETT BROTHERS EMOTIONALISM
EMOTIONALISM is my third Avett Bro. album. WOW did not let me down at all. Great album. They have a sound that is hard to describe as country or rock or a little of both. They have a Beatles " REVOLVER' sound to this album. Best thing anybody could say about their music...Great addition to collection

Absolut gelungen

Fantastic Record!
I was very happy with this album on vinyl. Not only is it my favorite album by The Avett Brothers, but the record itself plays as smoothly as I would have hoped. The sound, the tracks, all perfect, with album art that makes me wish to cherish this for as long as I live. A great buy~!

Some you win some you lose.
This was a recommendation, but was a complete disappointment. Its not bluegrass and has a very amateurish feel. The lyrics are naïve.
