Salsa - The Motion Picture

If you can get past the opening 10 minutes, this tacky Golan Globus production can be great, nostalgic fun. It seems like the director was attempting to make a traditional "Musical" where the characters break out in song... After the opening, cringeworthy numbers, "Mucho Money," and that Elvis cover they abandon that formula and go for a more straightforward romantic drama, with a colorful Miami backdrop as the setting. Most notable for the rare appearance of the late Rodney Harvey, this is one of the very few films of his where he takes a co-starring role.. His best friend Rico is played by former Menudo front man Robbie Rosa, and the light story involves romantic jealousies when Ken (Harvey) begins to date Rico's little sister Vicki, who is a real stunner.. and not so "little.." At the heart of the story is Rico's ambition to grab the title as the "King of Salsa" in the local nightclub "La Luna.." In order to do this, he must woo the Queen Bitch Luna, the self proclaimed Queen of Salsa.. More jealousy ensues as the older woman attempts to come between the young lovers Rico and Vicki... Of course the real draw of "Salsa" is the sexy dance numbers, and some truly unforgettable songs. Finally available on bluray in a wide screen print, after many years of the lousy cropped, 4x3 DVD from MGM... Fans of "West Side Story" and "Saturday Night Fever" should enjoy this... Just check your brain at the door and enjoy the celebration of Salsa music and Latin culture..

I did not see the difference in quality. It seemed that the quality in this Blu-ray was equal to the quality in the DVD version of the movie that I have. I would have returned the Blu-ray but I tossed the DVD version of the movie I had after I ordered the Blu-ray.

Salsa is a brilliant movie - one of the best movies with no major plot. There is fantastic music and great dancing and a hot guy - what more could you want.Rico (Robby Rosa and Menudo) wants to win a dance competition that will take him to Puerto Rico. He's also the older and over protective brother to Rita and when she starts dating his best friend Ken, he goes nuts when he finds out (they keep their relationship secret for a while). Will this ruin his chance of winning the dance comp?As I said earlier, there is fantastic music in this movie. Margarita and Under My Skin are the best. The actual scene when they play Margarita is fantastic. It's a now dated movie, but it is still a favourite of mine that I do watch over and over again still. I love it and any fan of dance movies should love it to - especially if you like that latin flavour.

My wife has been looking for this movie for quite sometime. It was in great shape when it arrived. She loves it...

The music is great,I really love this movie I even sent my neice in Arizona a copy it was my Mom's favorite she used to tell me about all the danceing and the music. If you are a fan of Salsa then this movie is for you good story line it's about a young Puerto Rican and his dream to go to Puerto Rico and win the Salsa Competion. The music will get to you it's that good you will want to get up and dance. It's an old movie but it is still good. Robby Rosa star's in this movie you will remember him from the Group Menudo, Rodney Harvey from The Outsiders another old movie so if you love music and like to dance get it.

Great movie! Glad to have found it on DVD!

There was lots of good music on this film but most of the dancing didn't go with it - I've seen gymnasts matching their steps to music better than this.The dialogue and acting was too unsubtle,abrupt and generally unbelievable at times.If you want to see lots of beautiful young dancers shaking their stuff in colourful costumes then this could be the film for you.But the love story and dancing have been done far more powerfully and persuasively on Patrick Swayze's movie Dirty Dancing.

Out of Print 1988 Dvd Release with only the Trailer. Case & Dvd both look + Plays Great!!.....

J'ais normalement déposé déjà un commentaire mais où est-il?J'ai pu voir le film malgré son import de la zone 1 certe c'est un filmen anglais ou espagnole mais il est sous titré en français ce qui n'estpas si mal. Comme toujours, il n'est pas facile de lire le texte et voirles images et de comprendre l'histoire. Il faut faire une impasse quelquepart. Pour ma part j'ai le choix des images et de l'écouter en anglais.Ce n'est pas pour moi un film inoubliable. C'est un film qui ne rest pasen mémoire après le visionnage. Peut-être que je ne l'ais très bien compris.Et je ne l'ais vu qu'une fois. C'est sûrement insuffisant d'où mon titre"pas facile".
