Inguinal & Rectal Temps Matched Exactly - 100.9
I bought this unit because my dog has Canine Epileptiod Cramping Syndrome (CECS - also known as Spike's Disease). Prolonged cramping can cause high fever which is a medical emergency, so I need a way to safely and accurately check my dog's temperature in the midst of an episode to know when to apply cold packs at home and/or if I need to take him to the vet immediately. I experimented with the four suggested areas of the body and felt that the inguinal was probably closest to being accurate. I brought this unit with me to my last vet appt in order to check it and got an inguinal reading of 100.9 followed by the vet immediately taking a rectal temp, which showed exactly the same reading, so my hunch was confirmed. If you're not going to check it against a rectal temp, at least get a feeling for what readings are 'normal' for your dog when using this. Be consistent with whatever area you decide to use and check it while at rest and after play. If you do this at random for a few days, you'll get a feel for what is your dog's norm with your unit. It's my opinion that the ears and gums are less accurate than the inguinal area because those areas can be more influenced by the environment and panting, though I believe the manual said this unit comes set for the ear. The inguinal reading might run a tad higher at times than the true temperature, but if fevers are your concern, then it's better to overestimate temp. Normal rectal temp for most dogs is around 100-102. But if your dog always shows between 98 and 100 with your unit, and suddenly shows 102, this would be cause for concern.Unlike taking a rectal temp, this baby is quick! If you are going to use the ear as the location for testing, I'd recommend turning off the audio to spare your pet the sound of the voice immediately speaking the temperature. There is no way you can get as close as you need to for an accurate reading (less than 2"), then pull it away quickly enough to avoid having it be loud in their ear.A bonus feature that might be handy for some people for whatever reason is, this thermometer also takes room and surface temperatures, which I've also found to be accurate. Just be sure if you are using on your dog, you have it set to the BODY position. Also, I noticed the manual states that sometimes adjustments need to be made and tells you how to do it. However, the additional support links listed in the manual do not work (at least at the time of this writing). Hopefully that will be corrected soon, as I would like to review that info as well.Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Mixed feelings
I bought this to monitor the temperature of my pregnant dog. I didn't want to use a rectal thermometer, as my dog gets stressed easily and I didn't want to hurt her if she ends up squirming. I found that the most accurate reading came from her upper gums--taking a temperature anywhere else is awful. It will jump to 1-2 degrees up or down. It could just be my dog, or a defective unit, but the reading did not fall below 100 F before labor started, so the actual birth came to me as a huge surprise. If you are looking to achieve VERY accurate results, I recommend doing it the old fashioned way and using a rectal thermometer. I honestly think that the ThermoPet Dog Thermometer is only good for quick readings (yet sometimes it may not be, because the manual says to take readings spaced at least 1 minute apart, so you might want to make sure you aim it right the first time). Speaking of the manual, the directions aren't so clear. On one page, it says to aim it no more than 1.5 inches away from the body, yet on another page it says to aim it 2" away. It doesn't even say which mode to use when taking a body temperature on your dog.Overall, I wouldn't recommend this to take readings that require a lot of accuracy, such as on a pregnant dog. Stick to the old fashioned method.

This product is amazing and has been a major help in caring for my dog!
My vet recommended that my dog's temperature be taken several times a week to monitor a chronic condition. I was dreading the thought of trying to do this myself, as the only thermometers I knew about required inserting a probe into the dog's ear...and my dog hates that. I also dreaded taking the dog to the vet to do it as it is over $70 just to walk through the door! Then a friend recommended I try ThermoPet because I could get a temperature reading without ever touching my dog. I ordered it and it just arrived - and all I can say is WOW. - All I have to do is hold the unit near my dog's abdomen and I get a reading in about a second! My dog isn't bothered about it at all!I can monitor the temperature myself now, and I only need to go to the vet when the temperature is above a certain point. This saves me a lot of money in vet bills...and it really eases my mind to know that I have the ability to monitor one of the main indicators that something may be wrong with my dog's health. I would definitely recommend this product to other dog owners.

-Very easy to use
I bought this when my border collie was getting close to having puppies, in order to avoid the alternative of having to stick one up her you-know-what all the time.Pros:-Very easy to use.... just point and shoot-Gives you a pretty good idea when you need to START using the "other thermometer"Cons:-It's not the most accurate thing in the world... I could get different readings even with waiting the amount of time recommended.-The instructions weren't the best.... especially on changing the "mode"-The batteries didn't last very longOverall:I am pleased with the purchase and will definitely use it again. I don't think it will replace a rectal thermometer, but makes the time leading up to when you need to use one much more pleasant for your four-legged friend!
