The triple spiral design is cold cast in brass, then mounted onto a slate plaque. It measures 5 inches by 5 inches. The triple spiral, triskele or tri-spiral motif that is carved on the passageway wall at Newgrange, Co. Meath, Ireland is mysterious in both its origin and meaning. One meaning is that the triple spirals are a metaphor for life. The three spirals are supposed to indicate birth life and death . This ties in with the Celts belief in reincarnation. Another possible meaning is the journey of self-discovery, as the spirals go within each other. This symbol has a magical quality. Killyliss Studio was established near Dungannon, County Tyrone in 1991 by the Irish Artist Colm McCann. From an early age Colm has been greatly influenced by the artwork of the early Celts. This is reflected in the gifts that he designs and hand produces. Colm studied sculpture at The University of Ulster, during this time he dedicated his time researching the Art forms prominent in Ireland in the first to sixth century A.D. He has successfully combined traditional Irish Celtic designs into modern functional gifts, some of which are destined to become modern classics. Each item is unique and guaranteed handmade to the highest standard from a range of materials including cold cast metals, slate and cast limestone. Colm hand carves each mould that is used in his original designs which results in the best of Irish craftsmanship. The Studio has grown over the years to produce a range of Celtic inspired gifts which include, Celtic chess sets, wall clocks, slate wall plaques, wall plaques, mirrors, pendants and brooches. Colm McCann is a registered member of the Crafts Council of Ireland and his work has been showcased at many exhibitions in Ireland and abroad.
