    Amor Real!!!!!!

*by A***N on February 4, 2012*

I first heard of "Deseo" thanks to Pandora Radio queueing up "Midnight Dancing" (track 9) about a year or two ago. Being a lover of both Jon's music AND Latin/salsa beats, my entire being just plain ignited!I knew Jon had a flair--even passion--for the Latin vibe when I heard the mariachi-influenced song "Day of Days" on his '3 Ships' album back when I was 8. But "Deseo" takes that flair to a whole. New. Level!"Deseo" departs from Jon's usual song time-frame in that the shortest song, "This Child" is a mere 2 min, 12 sec long. Quite the contrast indeed from the same man who is best well known for the oceanic-level time frames in much of the material he wrote for Yes, let alone his trademark "Olias of Sunhillow."Ah, but do not let the brevity of the song times fool you. Like a master poet skillfully weaving big concepts into a form as syllabically limited as haiku, Jon packs in all kinds of juicy punches: first, there's the salsa-jazz-rock fusion song "Amor Real," containing a smooth-funky bass sound from Milton Nascimiento that's paired with some of Jon's trademark spiritually edgy lyrics. Then there's the melodically sensual "Floresta" where Jon sings part of the song in Portuguese. I don't know what the words translate to in that song, but it doesn't really matter, 'cause let's put it this way: Jon's crazy-gorgeous voice + a language that just about shouts a certain sensuality = a vibe that allows the cares of the day to just lift off the shoulders, especially when you hear his words in English: "Let it go, let it go right away, be the Light."Following that is the sweetly-romantic and evocative "Cafe," where you hear cars and conversation in the background underneath Jon's chorus of "Take my hand tonight, take my heart tonight, take my soul tonight...this song reminds me..." This, overlaid with a soloist singing in either Spanish or Portuguese (I can't tell which). Hearing this song made my heart just absolutely ache with my own crazy-passionate romanticism, so it's one of my favorites.Now...flip through to track 9, "Midnight Dancing," the song I mentioned before. Listen carefully. This song doesn't just have a sensual tango-style beat. It's got lyrics that show Jon's very sensual human side, which may surprise some folks who mostly have viewed Jon's spiritual side. Depending on your point of view, such a surprise may be beautiful, or it may offend. And if it offends some people, tough noodles. Jon's a spiritual man, but with lyrics like the ones in "Midnight Dancing," he clearly ain't cut out to be a monk. ;-)These are just some of the crazy-awesome tracks on Jon's charming, beautiful--and yes, sensual--tip of the hat to the Latin American genre. Now flip this in your CD player and get your hot-salsa groove on!

    I've always loved this album

I've always loved this album, wish that Jon Anderson would do some sort of sequel (not necessarily called "Deseo 2," but in the same Latin music vein as this) and wish that he would have done a U.S. tour for it. Should have been a bigger seller than it was! Joyous music and Jon is in wonderful vocal form on it!
