Spirit of the Pose: Sketchbook 1 Paperback – January 1, 2005

I eyed this treasure for years before actually making the purchase. Wish I bought it sooner. It's easy to get lost within the pages no matter how many times I open it. I wouldn't call this a page turner, but only because I take forever looking at each one! Each figure has a life of its own and their own story to tell. Rather than an instructional book on how to draw, this is a collection of figure drawings the artist drew over the years. Alongside the images, there are great words of wisdom that demand the reader to search inside themselves. It sets an excellent example and will always have you walking away with something to strive for. From the times I hit a wall with drawing, flipping to a random page and reading the right quote helped overcome that wall. I can't recommend this book enough and can't wait to get the 2nd one!

It took me two years to get around to buying this book because I was hoping to get a deal on a used copy. But I've come to see that there aren't any used copies, probably because no one wants to part with theirs. And now that I've broke down and bought a copy I can see why.The beauty of the drawings should go without saying. Glen Keene's forward properly praises Gnass as an inspiring guide for the rest of us who are likely to get spun around and lost in drawing the human figure.Text in this book is short and sparse, but offers an insightful angle to pursuing art. The one saying that stands out in my mind is that there's no one out there keeping the secrets of drawing from you. I'm not sure why I find that comforting.I'm definitely not a big advocate of spending 45 bucks on a book. But if you spend it on Spirit of the Pose, I doubt you'll regret it.

This book is superb! The title say it all perfectly as this book is filled with what makes sketches come to life; the SPIRIT of the Pose. Worth every penny and more. Thank you Karl Gnass!
