A 5-star compendium if it were in color
As a former comic collector getting back into reading comics via collections like this one, I figured I didn't need to read the reviews for Spawn: Compendium 1. I had read a few Spawn back issues years ago and even own at least one or two. I wanted to buy this to catch up on the story from beginning to wherever it left off. So far, the book's content is great, as expected, but I really wish that it said in the description somewhere that it was all black and white. If you're unaware, the original Spawn comics were NOT published in black and white. So, there are some scenes were missing color really hurts the visual quality of this book. I give the story itself 5 stars, but this particular compendium is only worth 3 without color.

The source material is excellent. My complaint is the physical size and weight of the book. It makes it difficult to leisure read. The book is very high quality with thick paper but all that weight adds up and this tomb weighs a ton. The other complaint is my fault but I didn't catch that this was a black and white uncolored version. I feel you miss a lot without the colors and at times it makes it very difficult to tell what's going on especially in action scenes where there is a foot here and a fist there. If I had it all to do over I'd get a color version and perhaps a two volume set.

New or Veteran Spawn Fans
I've just recently started getting into comics. Wasn't really interested years ago due to the fact it felt like you had to travel the four parts of the world for one expensive issue. But that change when the compendiums and omnibuses came out for both books, Manga and Comics. The Spawn Compendium collects issues 1-50 so it is a great read for both those who are getting into Spawn and for those long time fans who were unable to get the sold out issues. And at these prices its worth picking up.

Good introduction to spawn!
I was looking for a way to get the first 50 issues of spawn without being too expensive, and I found this. However, it's all in black and white. It definately gives a diffrent edge to the spawn comics, the artwork is still great, although it can be hard to understand what's going on at times, especially during explosions. If you want color, that's what the origins series is for, which is the reason why image didn't decide to make the compendium in color.

I recommend it to anyone who likes antiheroes.
It's an amazing read. I've enjoyed Spawn in the past and I wanted to catch up on his comic history. So I bought this collection of his issues 1-50. and so far it's been a good read. Some parts are a bit hard to tell whats going on due to the pages being black and white, but it's not enough to ruin the reading experience.

It's in Black and White. I repeat. It's ...
It's in Black and White.I repeat. It's in Black and White. But you have to give it up for that pricepoint.

SPAWN begins, and it's great!
Loved it Loved it LOVED IT! The first 50 comics of Spawn in one book, what more do I need to say? Only one little let down; the pages were in black and white print, but that's ok because it didn't lesson the expereence of reading the comic at all.

Well done compendium
I like it, and compare to the origins volumes, all first 50 comics are there.

Even without colour, spawn is still awesome
This huge compendium collects the first 50 issues of spawn by Todd Mcfarlane. They have been reprinted in black and white, which might put some people off but I advise you not to be. Even though there is no colour it is the amazing artwork and the story which stands out. I am a fan of the walking dead which is also in black and white and that is still an amazing comic. I have never read spawn so I decided to buy this compendium which is a lot cheaper tham buying all the other collections individually. The story of how soldier Al Simmons is killed by a member of his own team and ends up in hell, where a demon tricks him into being one of his soldiers, a hellspawn blew me away and I was kept hooked all the way through. I can't wait for the next one!.

Big!
I love the black and white artwork, love reliving the early 90s. It's a great book for the price. Worth it for Spawn and McFarlane fans.
