I'm trying to avoid Teflon coated products.** A: I can't tell. I've been looking throughout the box and manual and can't find anything that describes what it is made from, particularly the non-stick surface, but it looks a lot like teflon. the unit itself is made from aluminum. Two substances that we're not crazy about. Because of that, I'll be returning this product. **Q: Is it possible to make only half a cup of dry rice in this or do you need to put at least 1 cup in for it to function properly?** A: You can make 1/2, 3/4, 1 & 1.5 cup of uncooked rice. Any of these measurement the cooker will function properly. Important, Use the measuring cup provided. DO NOT USE OTHER CUP. The critical part is the water & rice ratio rules should be follow diligently to get good result. **Q: What is the steamer insert made of and is it coated with anything?** A: This is the small version. It cooks at most 1 cup of rice. It has no steamer insert unless I threw it out with the box. The full size version which I also own came with a aluminum steamer insert. Then my house filled up with the smell of burned plastic, I traced it back to the kitchen but could not find what was causing the smell. When I did, I saw that the control panel had melted, to my absolute horror. For the first time ever the rice had also burned without automatically going to the warm setting. I took the cooking dish out and used a wooden spoon to try to turn the rice cooker off but it wouldn't turn off.
