another wonderful book by Max Evans
Having read all of Max Evan's books and loving every one of them, For the Love of a Horse was a "must have". Max is not just a wonderful writer, he has been there and done it, a true cowboy in every way. I know a lot of the country his books are about, and as he, am in awe of this harsh but spectacular Northeastern New Mexico land. "For the Love of a Horse" is about special horses Max has owned or ridden from boy-hood on up, and horses that have played a special role in all of our lives. It's about wrecks and spills, about heroic efforts of his horses, taking him to safety, and horses not so concerned about his safety! His affection and love for his horses is apparent on every page, and those of us who can count ourselves lucky to have had maybe one very special horse in our lifetime, certainly recognize the feeling. You will chuckle at times, and hold back tears at others. This is a book to keep among your "treasured books" in the bookshelf. Max, you did it again! Mimi

For the Love of a Horse
I absolutely loved this book. It not only pays respect and memories to certain great horses the author had the privilege to ride, but tells the story of a cowboy who loved horses and his life in working with them. This book inspired me to become a fan of the author Max Evans. If you have ever had horses and realize the difference in personalities and abilities of horses, you will appreciate this book. It has also inspired me to write memories of my own great horses over the years.

For the Love of a Horse
In the beginning, author Max Evans who lives in Albuquerque writes: "This is not a history of horses. It is a memoir of those horses who touched me--and a few of my friends--on a very personal level, beginning with my first horse, Cricket, and beyond." He first became acquainted with horses when he was four and first worked as cow hand on a ranch south of Santa Fe when he was 11.Evans weaves reminisces of ranch days and horses with all the color of an old time cowboy telling the truth along, of course, with some tall tales. Anyone with a penchant for horses, whether you've had them or not, will find Evan's recollections rolling along at a pleasant, light pace. He has a way of bringing the terrain right up close as he writes: "There were a few scattered waterholes among the miles of boulders and tall untouched grass in secluded little meadows. The San Cristobal cattle had plenty of range on the flats and it was against their nature to climb uphill...so we did a strange type of 'riding fence' in those days." It's just one of those books that's hard to put down.
