Horrible video quality!
I thought this would be a "good story," but the quality of the transfer totally ruined it. Very sorry I paid money for this DVD!

Terrible quality!
I am reviewing the manufactured on demand DVD version. The quality of the print is awful! Barely usable and I think it is incomplete. Stay away from this version!!

Don't buy this version
Very poor picture quality. Either a really bad original copy, or filmed on a TV. Can't recommend that you buy this version. Too bad, great story.

1940s Nicholas Nickleby Film
Despite one or two sterling performances, anyone wanting Nicholas Nickleby in a permanent form should buy either the 1980s RSC perfromance or the 2001 DVD. The RSC version may be overlong and contain some unnecessary scenes and characters but in David Threlfall's portrayal of Smike it has an all-time great performance. The parts of Nicholas and Kate in this early film are more suited in age than the 1980s version, but Nicholas is not up to James Darcy's toucing portrayal in the 2001 version. Nor does Stanley Holloway's worthy attempt at Crummles compare with the masterly one by Freddie Jones in the 1977 version.Indeed to have a completely perfect cast in this panoramic story, one needs the luxury of the five available versions.

Good watch
Great old movie. But if you want to experience the book more watch the 2002 version.

A reminder that older can be better
A terrific film enjoyed by all members of the family as a Sunday afternoon treat. What a joy to be engaged by the story line, aged related filmtography and quality of acting without the need for swearing, gratuitous violence and 'full on' promiscuous activities. The fact that it is in black and white and is at times a little shaky with the sound also not being of Dolby quality added to our collective viewing experience. In short the film provided us with a history lesson on how older films can be much better and more fulfilling than their 'modern' counterparts - refreshing.

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
I didn't realise how out dated this film was I do hasve a later version which I prefare, but that said for it's time it was an excellent film and well interpreted. I was very young when I saw this episode and fortunately the later edition does not loose the originality that sometimes more modern version do. still worth a watch.

Murky and mumbly.
Great to see the old faces of actors we've loved, but this was copied from a poor original. Often the dialogue was hard to distinguish and the light so poor that in candle-lit scenes it all seemed the same. Perhaps there no longer exists an original in better condition.

Nicholas Nickleby DVD
I like the early versions of these type of stories, modern versions seem to rely too much on background music and hi tech production.Closer to the book.Had this on video for ages and decided to update the format.

A fine cast makes up for the bland performance of Derek Bond in the title role. Cedric Hardwicke is marvellous.

Ealing's 1947 Version: The One to Buy
THIS IS EALING'S WELL-LIKED 1947 PRODUCTION FEATURING A GALLERY OF BRITISH STARS. APPARENTLY STUDIOCANAL HAVE GONE TO SOME LENGTHS TO RESTORE AND REMASTER THIS FILMS FOR DICKENS' CENTENNIAL. THIS IS GOOD NEWS AS PREVIOUS DVD EDITIONS HAVE LOOKED ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. SO THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY!
