Gran Canaria (Rother Walking Guides Europe) (English and German Edition)

I brought this on a trip to GC in 2018, looked through it for ideas, and personally did four of the suggested routes. On a value per volume basis, this was one of the best items I packed! It is literally a pocket guide, easily carried in a pack, jacket, or even the back of your jeans!There is detailed yet concise information on 72 routes. Some are quite ambitious, but others can be done in an hour so. The instructions can sound almost pedantic at times, but if you read carefully you will never be misled! My only caveat is that the miniature maps for each route give a very narrow perspective. This is partially solved with an indexed master map of the island on pages 8-9, but I would suggest Googlemaps supplementation before you go. A nice crowning detail is the tiny cross sectional topography schematics that show the elevation changes you will experience, to give you an idea of the exertion involved. All in all, a gem of German precision!

I can find no fault with this guide. During a week in Gran Canaria, we did 7 of these walks, with the aid of the GPS tracks downloaded onto my Garmin. All of the GPS tracks and walk descriptions were accurate, giving a realistic description of the route with respect to difficulty and timing. Useful information is given regarding bus transfers, so we were able to do all of the walks by public bus from Las Palmas. You do need to do your own research about buses, because timetables change, but the best routes are indicated. I accidentally deleted 2 of the GPS tracks, but we found the written directions ready to follow. There is a huge variety of walks, with a range of length, difficulty and character, so you can select an easier walk when you need a rest day. This is a book about walking, but there are several pages about history, culture and context, to give you a bit of a start. I found the Rother guide for La Palma similarly excellent.

La pena es que la versión en castellano tenía un plazo de entrega muy largo y era mucho más cara que esta. Por eso la compra de esta versión en ingles.
