Sensei Mike Reeves is a 10-time World Champion and World Record holder in breaking. In The Secrets of Breaking, he shares a wealth of knowledge and experience, from the most basic board breaks to the secrets of breaking stacks of concrete. For those with no previous experience, Sensei Reeves starts off with the basics: how to set up a break properly, where to strike a board with different techniques, how to condition your hands and how to select your materials for a successful break. Then he demonstrates and teaches 12 fundamental board breaks including the punch, knife hand, hammerfist, elbow, side kick, back kick and axe kick. Once you have the basics down, learn how to put them together in combination breaks. The highlight of this DVD is the advanced segment, where Sensei Reeves teaches you the secrets to power and speed breaking as he demolishes stacks of concrete and wood. Learn to break concrete with the double elbow strike, double hammer fist and stomp kick. Then do your own mini-world record break as Sensei Reeves calls it, breaking 5 stacks of boards in rapid succession. The detailed set-up instructions for each break help you safely and successfully achieve these advanced techniques.

Showy, redundant, but overall worth buying
I have seen Mike Reaves do his demonstration on television of repeating his World Record and it was impressive. Following are my comments of critique for this DVD which, very obviously, uses this feat as promotional material:1) This DVD could have been condensed. There is a lot of repetition of each break.2) There is a good overview of technique although the knife-hands breaking technique differs slightly than I was taught in Tae Kwon Do (but alas, I am not a world record holder).3) While his World Record is impressive why does he use the large spacers between each of the boards (as well as the slabs of concrete in his other demonstrations)? This makes the technique much easier and presents it as more fantastic than it really is. At our Tae Kwon Do dojang we are allowed to use only pennies as spacers (some of our students prefer none) for concrete and are not permitted to use spacers between boards. The large spacers provide a gap of movement for each board so that it is more like breaking 4-5 individual boards with one strike than one solid mass of wood. I was most disappointed that Mr. Reaves did not do a punch-through-concrete demonstration.4) His board-holder appears to be much less fit than Mr. Reaves: stooped shoulders, overweight, with a belly to match. Not a good image for a martial artist.5) What I liked most about this DVD wasn't even on the main section but in the special features area: use of the makiwari board. A viewer should focus much of their attention on learning how to use the makiwari board. Without a strengthened hand you should not attempt any of these breaks.Would I recommend this DVD? Yes, but you will need to sort out what is entertainment and what is actual technique being taught.

step-by-step instruction
Powerful and hardened by his martial arts, Mike Reeves is an impressive artist. For a novice like me, all of his breaks looked great. While I can't do them, I felt I knew from watching how to properly set the breaks up and the proper form. The focus and intensity needed for these breaks comes through the screen as he destroys his targets. A little slow at times, but very impressive.
