Then they were replaced by 3.5mm jacks that also included a microphone signal. Those were used by the original cellphones, everything from AMPS to CDMA, TDMA, GSM. With smaller technology and slimmer LTE and 5G phones we now use the USB-C connector. If you still have a 3.5mm audio headset, wired earbuds, etc. and upgraded to a phone without that jack you can use this adapter and not have to buy a new headset. In my case I have a Bose Quiet Comfort 20, with automatic noise cancellation, amazing sound quality, and $195 to replace. Instead of replacing the Bose QC20 I picked up this adapter, plugged the QC20 into the 3.5mm female jack, plugged the USB-C male on the other side of the short cable into the phone. I can now use the headset just fine. It truly is plug and play. It comes with printed directions in a clear vinyl bag, but you really just plug it in between the headset and the phone. No configuration required, no settings changes. It works with iPhones, Android, Linux, etc. Pretty much if your USB-C device supports audio out and in (TRRS) this will work. Troubleshooting? **Q: Can I use this as audio input as well? For recording with a microphone?**
A: It can work depending on your device. It has the hardware to support it. I've tried it on an Samsung S20 with the Samsung headphones from my old S6 and the volume and function buttons worked as well as did the in-line microphone. I also tried it on a Windows 10 laptop and it shows up as Speakers (hi-res audio) as a selection for both speakers and microphone. Both worked fine for a zoom session. Also clever on windows was that plugging in the dongle doesn't switch the default audio. Plugging headphones into the dongle switches the default audio, so it broadcasts the detection of the headphones as well! Hope that helps!

**Q: Does it allow stereo recording through a stereo mic?  does it require the tip-ring-sleeve (trs) plug or the tip-ring-ring-sleeve (trrs) plug?**
A: Based on my use on One Plus 8T, it supports both trs and trrs, since it supports mic+stereo output in my earphones. But I believe it supports trrs only when your phone doesn't have a 3.5mm Jack, in which case it works as a pass-through and doesn't use the DAC in the cable, but the DAC on your phone.

Analog headset adapters used to be 1/4" in diameter. We put those on our heads to listen to the "record player". Then they were replaced by 3.5mm jacks that also included a microphone signal. This converter cable works really well on my phone and tablet. The sound is much fuller and more rich than when I use the headphone jack on my Lenovo tablet. My Samsung phone doesn't even have a headphone jack, which is why I bought this converter in the first place, and it works like a charm. For some reason it doesn't work on my OnePlus phone, but thankfully that one already has a headphone jack, so it's not a big deal.
