Count on Pablo (Math Matters)

Brilliant: Makes Math Relevant for Young Readers
I was just so delighted with this book and the Math Matters series in general. Skip counting is such an important concept, and Derubertis presents it in a very engaging manner. Most math books tend to be overtly didactic, but this book and all the other Math Matters series present mathematical concepts in a way that makes them immediately relevant to young readers. It makes sense to count twenty limes one at a time, but when you have to count a hundred vegetables, counting in fives and tens makes the job go faster. What's more, Pablo finds a very clever way of ensuring that his grandmother sells all her vegetables. So, there's a mini lesson in marketing, too, if you will.I was very pleased to discover that the same kind of practical application is used to persuade young readers about the importance of being able to calculate areas--it makes a real difference to the amount a little boy can charge one of his customers--and perimeters. I also discovered that Kane Press publishes science readers that, like the Math Matters series, present a single science concept at a time through an innovative, engaging story. In addition, to this series, I think you'll also enjoy Charlesbridge Press's Math Adventure books. My children loved "A Place for Zero." With three young children whose education I take very seriously, I'm very pleased that I have recourse to books such as these. They make learning math and working with numbers both fun and relevant. The best thing about these stories is that they can be read to younger readers as well. My pre-schooler enjoys being read to, and it's a joy to be able to expose him to the mathematical concepts his older brother and sister are working on mastering.

Excellent book for practicing early multiplication skills
Excellent book for practicing early multiplication skills. My students learned how to draw arrays, and we practiced recognizing and comparing patterns in multiples between 2s, 5s, and 10s. My third-graders were "hooked" by the story, especially since a student in our class was headed to Mexico for a month. Everyone wanted him to visit a market like Pablo.
