Good sound, seamless Bluetooth connectivity is a real treat
I was looking for a dock for my wife's iPhone4 and my Blackberry. I had 2 mandatory requirements other than good sound quality:1. It should work with an iPhone 4 in a bumper case.2: I should be able to use it with non-Apple devices using the AUX input.I first purchased the Philips Fidelio DS8500 Speaker Dock with Remote for iPod/iPhone (White/Silver) (Note: I have posted of review there as well) based on the good reviews on Amazon but returned it because it wouldn't allow the iPhone4 to dock with the bumper case and there was an omnipresent hum when I used the AUX input. The sound quality however was excellent. I then purchased the Soundfreaq and was able able to compare it with the Phillips before I shipped the Phillips. Here are my conclusions:1. Sound: Phillips wins hands down. The bass is fuller and it can be played at a higher volume. Having said that, the Soundfreaq is no laggard. The bass isn't as deep but the sound over all is excellent. My wife listens mostly to older Indian songs and podcasts, neither of which requires big thumping bass. Both genres are more vocal oriented and the Soundfreaq does a good job. I have a different system for my periodic dose of classic rock/metal and any sound dock in this price range will most likely not do the trick anyways.2. Connectivity and convenience: The Soundfreaq is the outright winner. The iPhone4 connects without any adapters even with the bumper case. No problems! Even better, I don't even need to actually mount the iPhone on the dock because of Bluetooth connectivity. It took 5 - 7 minutes from the moment I signed the UPS receipt for the box to having a song from the iPhone 4 playing through this dock via bluetooth. It works like a charm. Setup is a breeze and the convenience of Bluetooth is a HUGE plus. Similarly, I was able to connect my Blackberry via Bluetooth, so I no longer need to use the AUX input for my BB. The device can stay in your pocket or you can do something else on it while the music plays through the dock. Also, the AUX input works perfectly with no background hum like the Phillips.3. FM radio: Works fine on the Soundfreaq. Not present on the Phillips. This isn't a very big differentiator but since I'm spending more for the Soundfreaq, its nice to get more too.4. Looks/aesthetics: both systems look pretty good. I liked the Phillips but the retro, vacuum-tube radio like design of the Soundfreaq is very nice.5. iPhone app: Phillips' app is buggy, clunky and is more of a hindrance. Soundfreq app does what it is supposed to and stays out of the way. Neither app needs to be used but the Soundfreq app doesn't irritate like the Phillips.Conclusions:1. If you want deeper bass and all round richer sound, go with the Phillips. I am however very satisfied with the Soundfreaq in this department.2. The convenience of the Soundfreaq cannot be matched by the Phillips. I really like the fact that I can switch on bluetooth on my phone (I don't have it running all the time to conserve battery), connect and I'm in business from anywhere in the room. No wires. No need to even get close to the actual dock.3. Soundfreaq is more expensive, and more than what I was planning to spend but I think I'm getting decent value for the extra money.I'm happy with my purchase of the Soundfreaq and more important, the wife loves it. I'm keeping it and will ship back the Phillips.

Very good, almost great........
Don't let the title fool you. This is a very neat system, with great build quality and easy to get running right out of the box. I certainly WILL recommend it to anyone with the same requirements I have. The sound quality is about as good as you can get at this price range with bass distortion only evident above 27/30 volume level. This is normal (you should not really be driving any system this hard - ever!).Nevertheless, this is not the reason I purchased the Soundfreaq system. The 4star rating has nothing to do with the sound quality (which is very good), but rather with the improvements that can be made to the iPhone app that controls it. I wanted a smallish bedroom dock system:1) with a buit-in FM Radio (since the iPhone does not)2) without a big LCD display (since the iPhone does)3) without a built-in alarm (since the iPhone does)4) capable of charging the iPhone5) with good sound quality6) capable of being controlled by an iPhone app.and it does these things very well, save for (6) above, which it does only adequately.Luckily, software can be updated and I am looking forward to Soundfreaq giving us an improved app with features such as connecting the bluetooth when the app is launched (instead of having to activate it from the iPhone settings every time). My only other gripe is that the dock inserts forces me to take off the (very thin) cover I have on the iPhone when I need to dock it. As a result, I am using it without the dock insert (not ideal) but it works. In summary, I can recommend this system for built quality, sound quality, FM reception and ease of use, all of which is great. A bit more thought is required for the docking app.JM - South Africa.

Good for casual users
Simple and Attractive unit. Plenty loud for normal people. I have an iPhone 4 and while it can charge on the dock, the annoying "not optimized for this device" message pops up when trying to use it as an iPod while docking. The biggest drawback for me is that it cannot play Pandora Radio WHEN its docked. Also the treble and bass switches are basically useless. The range of -3 to 3 does not make a great difference. Most of the time you'll be in UQ3 mode, where the music sound the sharpest. When you are in UQ3 mode the bass and treble button becomes inactive. I did give it a four star because I am a casual user and think the unit looks purty. Just don't expect it to dazzle you with all the extra special feature, cause it don't have any. This Sound Freaq unit is good at playing music over bluetooth. Its like a good toaster, it makes toast. Nothing more and nothing less.*Update -Dropped from 4 stars to threes stars because the (Volume -)button on my Toshiba TV remote turns on/ off the SoundFreaq system. So when I turn down the volume of the TV the SoundFreaq keeps turning on snd off. WTF!

awesome
I started looking for a cheap speaker for less than £50 but ended up buying this one for nearly £150 and I do not regret having done so. Why?It looks good and it sounds good. I've played music for the last 15years so I'm quite trained in listening. Soundfreaq completely satisfied me. The speaker itself is far better than what most audio samples will be. Put simply, the bluetooth connection and your MP3s are probably of worse quality than what this speaker can produce so they will sound as good as they could possibly sound! Having said that, instead of internet streaming or low quality MP3s you play some 256 or 320 mp3s then chances are you will enjoy them better if you play them through the i-phone dock or the jack connection. Quality will be awesome for as long as you're not a freak(q) audiophile :)Loudness-wise, I'm using this in a lounge of 25m2. At full volume, it's too loud to talk and you'd have to yell to be heard. However, if you're looking to throw a dance party then that's not your speaker. Buy something louder. If you're up for a lounge party with people talking and socialising then this is completely fine if you use it at the upper end of the volume. For normal use, I'm now having playing music at half volume from my mobile and having the speaker at half volume too. Sounds loud and clear. Finally, the bluetooth connection. No problems with it whatsoever. It actually works even if I leave the lounge and go in other rooms.

Fantastic piece of kit!
I have no doubt there are far better sound systems out there, however I'm confident you would have to pay a fair bit more for them. The soundfreaq sound platform is pretty amazing, especially for the money (I paid £50 for mine). It worked first time without any fuss, I'm using my phone (Sony Xperia Z) via bluetooth and it connects everything with no problem. You can even use the charging dock and smart connect app to make the phone connect to the dock and play music when you plug it in (I'm sure there are ways to do this with most other smartphones as well).Anyway back to the sound platform! The build quality is fantastic and the sound is brilliant for a single unit. I have to say certain songs don't sound as good as others through it, but I wonder if this is to do with the mp3 files themselves rather than the platform. The only letdown I can think of is the soundfreaq app. It does work and does what it's meant to but it's not really been made to the same standard, but saying that it is free...One last nice feature is the remote, it's basic but decent and it can be stored away in the side of the soundplatform when not in use.

mediocre sound.
OK sound quality. Not as brilliant as they say. It is convenient and good for occasional use.
