Dum Dum Girls' new EP End of Daze offers a bracing, daring sonic example of an artist evolving in her understanding of the world. The EP was recorded in 2011 and 2012 with Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes and Dee Dee's longtime producer Richard Gottehrer, whose track record includes the Brill Building, CBGB, and Sire Records.

My favorite release of theirs so far
I purchased this on Vinyl very recently but had the mp3 version shortly after it came out. First exposure was seeing them live at Johnny Brendas in Philadelphia, 2011, during the release of the 'He Gets Me High' EP. While I enjoyed the album 'I Will Be,' I found the sound on 'Only In Dreams' to be too repetitious. The 'End of Daze' EP caught me completely by surprise, not only with it's slicker production and up-front vocals, but each song has it own feel and sound -- while still satisfying the retro desires of the listener -- and the individual tracks fit an arc that rises with 'Mine Tonight' and lands perfectly with 'Season in Hell.' This EP is a soundtrack waiting for a movie to play beneath.Lyrics on this are also brilliant, in my opinion. Dee Dee's song writing continues to evolve here and continues to impress -- She laments a lost love on the penultimate track, 'Lord Knows' - "The bliss I found in ignorance/a slow burning of Icarus" and draws the listener right in. Is this a breakup record? Perhaps so, but overall any fan would be happy to take this ride over and over.

End of Daze is solid
The Dum Dum Girls's new EP delivers! They manage to maintain their unique sound that we've come to love, while creating some new and wonderful tracks. "Mine Tonight" is reminiscent of their album "Only in Dreams", and it a great way to open this new EP. "I Got Nothing" really hits home with some fantastic lyrics. "Trees and Flowers" is the slow-dance of the prom, establishing an awesome atmosphere that the Dum Dum Girls are so skilled at doing. "Lord Knows" works much the same way. Just classic Dum Dums. "Season in Hell" is a great finish to this EP. This track picks up with more pep and determination and ends with the lyrics "It's the End of Daze."

Awesome
The Dum Dum Girls are an amazing blend of retro Phil Spector wall of sound with alternative. They site bands ranging from the Ronettes to the Ramones, Iggy Pop, The Cure, Mazzy Star and the Jesus and Mary Chain as major influences. I was blown away by their Only in Dreams album when I first heard it last year and this 5 song EP is a great follow up. Stylistically, there's a better range of tempo on this EP giving the drummer a chance to break the monotony a bit and giving them a slightly more "mature" sound. Dee Dee's amazing voice is on display on all the tunes, she's the best singer in rock as far as I'm concerned. Give it a listen.

They keep getting better
By far the best yet for me, with side 2 being even better than side 1.I have the vinyl and downloaded the mp3s that come with it. The only other dum dum hard copy I have is Only In Dreams (vinyl and mp3s as well) which I also like very much but find this one significanltly improved, particularly in terms of sound quality. I can understand the comparisions to the ravonettes etc but this band has a sound that is distinctive beyond that. I do tend to enjoy and listen to a lot of female bands and vocals and am happy to see a new group joining the list of my favorites.

Another winner from Dum Dum GIrls
Kristin (Dee Dee) writes some of the best songs around, and this has two standouts, Trees and Flowers(a cover but so much better than the original in my view) and Lord Knows, while the other 3 are very solid as well. Highly recommended.

Dream Pop du jour
Dum Dum Girls always sound to be in that dream state or influenced state if you will. Their songs have gotten better in their short life. Their musi is the sort you listen to alone or if you're trying to make time with that special hipster in your life.Key Tracks: Mine Tonight, Lord Knows, Season in Hell.Vinyl Result: On the wax this EP sounds timeless

their best
An EP, obviously, but still their best release. More melodic and slightly dream-poppier than other material, which might make it the best introduction for many listeners new to the Girls. All the tracks are excellent--no joke--but my favorite is the slow song, their cover of the Strawberry Switchblade tune "Trees and Flowers". ("...and I hate the buildings, and the way they tower over me": might be my favorite lyric of the past few years.)

The best yet
Some great tracks on this EP and the Dum Dum Girls just keep getting better. Dee Dee's songwriting is excellent and the overall shoegazing/pop feel to the tracks is second to none.
