Fly Fishing Virginia: A No Nonsense Guide to Top Waters

Smith river is not included
Good book but it doesn't include the river I bought it for haha? Smith River is considered (and was in 2007) one of Virginia's best trout rivers, and I missing something? Why would this not be included. Anyway, it's not as useful as I'd hoped. An older book entitled "Virginia Blue ribbon streams" by Harry Murray, copyright 2000, is more useful for me, but then again, this book covers mossy creek where Murray's book does not, for example so get both? your choice.... I bought them both used here on amazon.

Great Book
I think this is a great book for 35 salt and freshwater fly fishing spots in Virginia, plus a few extra private areas. The pictures are very nice and it contains a great deal of useful information for each location. I also really appreciate the text explaining a bit of background for each place. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I would like an overall map of all the locations. I know this is a petty comment, but it's a little time consuming to flip through the whole book when I really only want to concentrate on one area of the state. It still doesn't change the fact that the contents of each place have been very helpful.

Good for beginners or those not familiar with major Virginia waters but not for those looking for more remote, less known areas.
Good basic information provided with maps. A truly no nonsense guide to major rivers for fly fishing in Virginia. While the information provided IS helpful, it doesn't provide much information about off the beaten path fishing areas as is geared toward the novice/beginning fly fisherman. Most areas discussed are heavily fished but it does provide good basic information for them. Various species besides trout are discussed and it would make a good beginner's guide but isn't really for the more advanced fly fisherman.

It's OK
While there are a few good tips in it, I did not find near the level of detail I was expecting. Maps are not much to write home about. I have used it a little to compare with other books, but like I say, it's just "OK," nothing more. A REALLY good book (very, very informative) is David Hart's "Flyfisher's Guide to Virginia." Get Hart's if you want only one book to carry around.

Good Reference
Well written and informative. Beasley provides a wealth of information to benefit flyfishers of all skill levels. An excellent reference.

Good book but needs better maps
I just purchased this book about a week ago for my new Ipad with retina display. While I like the text on the retina display, the maps are hard to read, especially the state route numbers are illegible. I had to switch back and forth between the maps of this book and the actual Google Maps for Ipad for better views. The interstate and main route numbers appear fine and legible. Hopefully the paperback format does not have this map issue. The information about the places to fish is accurate, at least for 2 places that I visited. I tried out the Rose River and Rapidan River, the instruction took me right to the entrance of the Rose River. I also found public places to fish along the Rose River marked by VDGIF, which are next to the private part of the Rose (marked with post signs indicating the sections belong to Rose River farm), but the book does not mention about the public sections of the river.I am new to fly fishing in Virginia, so this book would be very useful. Other than the map issue for IPad format, I highly recommend this book.

Beau did a fantastic job with this book, which is evidenced by its popularity and it earning a first prize Excellence In Craft Award for Best Outdoor Book of 2009 by the Virginia Outdoor Writers' Association. Great, concise info, excellent maps and nice photographs make this a must-have for anyone ever wanting to check out some of Virginia's awesome trout, bass and saltwater fisheries!David CannonAuthor, Fly Fishing Georgia

A Must Have
This is the best all around fly-fishing book currently available covering the diverse array of angling opportunities one finds in the Old Dominion. The book combines the perfect balance of basic "guidebook" information--where-to and how-to items--with pertinent information about the waters covered. An excellent sampling of the major fresh and saltwater fisheries (creek/river/lake/bay) is presented. Moreover, it is wonderfully designed and illustrated with beautiful color photography and valuable maps throughout. Besides the indispensable coverage of the fisheries, lots of good contact information for fly shops, reputable fly fishing guides, and conservation clubs is also provided. You will want to keep this book readily accessible--mine is on the coffee table in our lodge at Greasy Creek Outfitters.
