Google Nest Wifi Router, Strong connection, Every direction

Was totally fed up with Virgin Media's Hub 3 wifi performance, literally would hardly work outside of 5 meters from their hub, so ordered this nest wifi router. Very easy setup, just plugged ethernet cable into virgin router, attached all the house's wifi devices to it, disabled virgin wifi and boom! Works amazingly in every room in the house (4 bed) with good wifi speeds throughout. Wasn't sure if I'd need 2 of these, but no, one is sufficient. Thoroughly recommended, with half decent control tools for family etc included.

Reliable

I had a router/modem supplied by my network. It was only single band. Over the years ive also added a lot more smart devices and tech to my home. 2 gaming consoles are wired in and around 15 are wifi including lighting, smart meters, tvs, speakers and google home accesories. With my old router things like streaming was often registering 5mbs when it should be 70-80mbs. Now i can stream 4k movies with no issues. It was very easy to set up but one bit of advice to save you a lot of time. Rename the google wifi nest to that of your old router as well as the same password then turn wifi off at your old modem. This will instantly connect all your old smart devices without going through each one. Turn off your old wifi on your old router/modem to avpid conflicts. It took me about 10 mins to fully set up and have everything working, ive not used anything more complex on the device so far and I don't think ill need to. My wired gaming devices run straight from the modem. I will of course update if i have any issues.

I bought a couple of Nest Wifi Routers and have them connected by ethernet. The setup is pretty straight forward and the speed is fine when using an ADSL or Fibre Broadband connection i.e. 100Mbps download speed or less. At that speed the loss between nodes is limited and the system runs pretty reliably. For faster connections there are a couple of limitations to be aware of: - on a 1Gig connection the max wifi speed is around 500Mbps even with a Cat6/7 cable from the router - so Nest loses around 50% of the bandwidth - when the satellite nodes are running in wireless mesh mode the speed falls off further - the upload speed experience is similar - my nest setup loses around 50% of the bandwidth One big issue with the nest router that I only discovered by reading posts on reddit is that the dual gigabit ethernet ports aren't physically connected - i.e. the router uses software to "bridge" between the ports. The result of this is that even with a fast (1000Mbps) download speed going in to the main nest router, any device that is physically wired in to the second port (or connected to a switch connected to the port) will have a max speed of c600Mbps. This is pretty poor as it's not made clear in the documentation that google provide. The one final issue to be aware of is that Google can and do use the data from your router to add to their profiling of individuals - so there's a huge privacy concern to be aware of for anyone that connects to a network of google routers.

Like all mesh routers, this works by broadcasting wifi between the router and points elsewhere in the house which then broadcast their own wifi signal. It wins on ease of use and set up by comparison with more complex mesh/router set ups. For a majority of people, this is the best approach. A couple of points to note: -You cannot split the 2.4 and 5ghz bands, which can sometimes be a problem for some devices. -It works best if you remove your broadband providers router if connected to FTTP and connect direct to your modem. -You can have too many points - I used to have 5, but cut that to 3 and my signal improved. -The built in parental controls are free and excellent if you consider many brands charge extra or don't include these (Orbi). -This is effortless when it comes to compatibility with streaming and cloud services. -You can certainly buy faster and more impressive (on paper) mesh routers these days, but the Google Nest system just works and I would take reliability over speed everytime.

I'm a Google wifi user and have 3 of the old units dotted around the house and recently had issues with lack of reception back garden as well as internet running slow (not to be mistaken to ISP and ISP hardware or DNS as using Cloudfare DNS) Adding this unit wasn't straight forward as I had to reset the old Google wifi routers to factory before setting up new one as master. Took 3 attempts only mainly down to my own fault of not following instructions and thinking i know how to do it. Once Nest wif setup and using the new app for mobile, everything else fell in to place. Old Google wifi routers powered on and Nest wifi picked up and joined to new home wifi SSID. Second, third all joined without any issues and once placed in desired rooms, all devices connected without fault. Decided to use the original Google wifi master router as a spare for loft room and again, reset device and nest wifi picked up to join. I'm glad to say that I now have 2 bar reception in my garage that's 20 meters back of garden where before, nothing. internet downloads a breeze as I can monitor daily on speeds as well as mesh signal strengths. Now at home, I'm completely wifi and no more home plugs since this unit has altogether removed the need for it. If I had the monies, I would have replaced all old Google wifi with Nest model but seems to be working as required for now.

Lots of good reviews but not my experience! And the the slogan of Strong connection, every direction. Bought this to to replace Virgin Hub 3 that get mediocre reviews, nightmare to connect my iPad the latest generation 9 would not see it in Google Home rebooted everything numerous reloaded Apps etc to no avail, spent hours trying! The tried my iPhone SE connected in 30 seconds!! Aagghhh. But the disappointment comes with speed and range it’s worse than the Virgin Hub 3 and not stable one minute you can get the full 100 mbs in the kitchen which is next door to the lounge and the next time it’s 20mbs! Also it seems to dislike certain apps would not connect to NHS app and buffered the BBC iPlayer, Tried various distance speed tests and always worse than Hub 3 top of the stairs 50mbs Hub 3 and 30mbs Nest WiFi. Granted it’s got some good features that seem to work well, we’ll kind of the ability to name hub and password used the Hub3 details and it connected to most devices without inputting password again, but I had to reinstall Nest protect smoke detector you would have thought it would see it own product family, so really disappointed no benefits whatsoever so it’s going back unfortunately I was taken by the hype.

For Australian buyers. This router works amazingly well. The most fastest and strongest signal I have got in my 2 bed room apartment so far in Perth after trying 2 different WiFI routers brands in past 2 months! Best way to set up is through your WLAN cable connected to the laptop via your router and then access the IP address to set up the settings. Some of the most common addresses are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.20.1, 10.1.1.1 and 10.0.0.138. Then use Google home app (you have to be patient) to add the deviceon your phone or tablet. It will take a while approx 20 mins to set it up properly.

Works well . Does what it says . Software setup limited to google home app which is bit anoying . Needs to have more advanced options and we browser setup access

Works great but keep in mind it comes with an Australian plug so you would need an adapter for that
