A Landmark Album in Musical History
In case you don't know, "Cubic U" is the name used by an icon in the Japanese music scene Utada Hikaru gave herself and used for this, her very first album and first U.S. release of her career. It is in English and, frankly, lacks the polish of her later releases. She recorded "Precious" when she was around fourteen years old so her voice lacks the maturity and richness of her later releases but if you are a fan of "Hikki", this is a must-have recording of the artist who broke all industry records with her subsequent first Japanese album, "First Love" (as Utada Hikaru). The 20-page plus cover booklet insert includes lyrics in English as well as Japanese content.By the way, "Cubic U" meant that Hikaru is the third musical power of "U", the Utada family — her father was a record producer and her mother a singer.

This CD is for old fans with Hikki nostalgia
It is very different compared to her much later albums, I am talking about both her Japanese and US albums. It is an interesting piece for old fans who want to discover Utada's origins and what she sounded like a decade ago.Occasionally, you will be identify Hikki's distinct traits and voice, but most of the time it sounds more like a teenager singing.

Plenty of Potential
No, Utada Hikaru is not the GREATEST POP SINGER IN THE WORLD. But neither is she some lightweight bit of fluff, a la Brittany Spears and a thousand other acts. Her albums and singles so far have shown that she has a voice that, with a bit of time, could mature into something special. This album isn't packed with gems, but it's got some good stuff and hopefully it, and First Love, are just the start of a brilliant career.

Re: I paid a big $SUM for this CD! But...
...hei, no regrets. At the tender age of 14, Cubic U aka Utada Hikaru is impeccable. Her voice is well controlled, vibratos not overtly done, the husky lows sizzle (esp. in "I Don't Love You") and her highs are sweet.(Listen to "Take A Little While")She co-wrote all the songs except the Carpenter hit "Close To You". To be fair, the tunes are not the mainstream hip-hop/R&B type you hear from Destiny's Child, Toni Braxton or TLC. I would say that the music is a bit too mature for the young Hikaru. You would expect someone like Minnie Riperton to actually belt out the songs. However, this is not an adversity for little Hikaru because, the freshness of her voice adds a different flavor to the songs. If you are not into bubble gum tunes / commercialized R&B music, Cubic U is something you should add to your MUST BUY LIST.

She was born in New York on 1/19/83 and grew up immersed in music. Recently she's earned much praise for her musical sense and for her talent as singer-songwriter. Hikaru Utada...Happy Belated B-day...great album...
Of all the j-pop singers Hikki is the act to follow. No one exhibits her fine use of vocals english and nihongo. For americans turned off by japanese lyrics Precious is an album which all can enjoy. Hikki uses many typical pop/r&b techniques and develops her own personal style. I was completely wowed by all the songs i have heard from her. I maybe a biased japanese guy who loves Hikki, but her music and voice back all the praise up.

close but no cigar. . .
Cubic U, otherwise known as Utada Hikaru, had her first debut album in Japan under this Toshiba EMI label. Although I like the first debut album of Utada Hikaru "First Love" more, I have to give a lot of respect to Cubic U (same person), because at the age when these tracks were created, she was a mere 14 years old!! The HEAVY American influence is obvious in each track, as it emulates some of the late 1990 sounds of R&B artists. However the major problem I have with the album is that most of the tracks sound TOO much alike. They're generally with a slow rhythm, it's catchy, but I don't know if you want to hear the same type of rhythm for 12 tracks straight. Some of the songs that break the mold, and are among my favorites on the album are track 1: my little lover boy; track 4: i don't love you; and track 9 work things out.I got this CD to find out just what Utada Hikaru was like before she made it big, and although her voice is still the same, the styles from "Precious" to "First Love" are vastly different. It amazed me that "Precious" only sold 350K (I believe that's right) albums, but now I understand why. Thank goodness Hikki's styles got a touch-up, and now presents a much more round style set, from dance beats to love songs. If you're looking for some R&B beats, this isn't a bad CD at all, but if you've had a taste of Hikki and are coming back to check out her origins, you'll be a bit disappointed.

7曲目の「Take A Little While」は個人的に大・大・大好き!! この透き通った感じは、14歳の宇多田ヒカルにしか出せないものだと思います。小箱にかぎを付けてずっとしまっておきたくなるような、大切にしていきたい曲です。
