I'm always skeptical about "romantic" treatments of subjects. however, I have to say that this biography of Nietzsche brought alive to me much of the struggle that he endured the last 20 years of his life. I gained an even greater appreciation of his work through the lense of his suffering. I recommend this to anyone who wants a different perspective on the humanity of Nietzsche.

I have never taken a philosophy class nor have I ever read anything by Nietzsche. I was fortunate to run across this book which I think is a GREAT personal introduction to Nietzsche – not necessarily an introduction to his philosophical writings, but an introduction to the man himself. I am now very interested in finding out what Nietzsche had to say and am really looking forward to reading his philosophical works!

Stefan Zweig wrote this believable book about Nietzsche. I could not put this down and read it in one go. Brilliant!

Stefan Zweig is a nice, honest human being. Nietzsche? I found him baffling. Some great intuitions, and then ramblings about nonsense. He likes paradoxes. This is ok, for a while, then paradox after paradox, and I can't figure out what he is talking about. I think that Nietzsche was an extreme narcissistic personality.

Zweig is a good writer.

This work focusses less on the actual thought of the man and much more on the man himself, his feverish approach to thinking and the essence of his Icarus-like character. Zweig captures Nietzsche's personality brilliantly and his writing is superb.
