A pistol-packing parson is torn between heaven and hell in this gritty Western adventure starring Glenn Ford, Carolyn Jones, Barbara Hershey and David Carradine. While war rages between the local cattlemen and sheepherders, gunslinger-turned-preacher Jim Killian (Ford) rides into town determined to start his own church. When his efforts to stop the bloodshed lead to rape, arson and murder, Killian must decide whether to bring about peace through faith alone or his deadly skills with a gun. Based on an unproduced screenplay by two-time Academy Award winner* Dalton Trumbo, Heaven with a Gun was the final film produced by Frank and Maurice King, whose joint career spanned 28 years and included the cult classics Dillinger (1945), Gun Crazy (1950), The Brave One (1956) and Gorgo (1961). * Writing (Motion Picture Story): Roman Holiday (1953); The Brave One, 1956

R Rated Western
It’s a typical old western with corny parts, but I didn’t know there were westerns in the old days that included full nudity. I was surprised!

A man of God, or a man with a gun?
You've seen this scenario before: Cattlemen and sheepherders fighting over a piece of land with grass and water. Into the middle of this fracas rides Jim Killian, gunman and preacher, determined to get and maintain peace in the valley. That isn't going to be easy...The cast of this 60's Western is deep. Glenn Ford is Jim Killian, former gunfighter and convict, and still blessed with a wicked fast draw. John Anderson is Esa Beck, the crusty leader of the cattlemen, willing to maim and kill to keep the land for his cattle. Noah Beery has a nice supporting role as his foreman. J.D. Cannon is a hired gun, out to get Jim Killian. The cast also includes a young David Carradine and a young Barbara Hershey. The story works well, as Killian and Beck circle for advantage, and as Beck becomes increasingly ruthless in his means. In the end, Killian will have to decide whether he is really a man of God, or only a man with a gun. Great movie from the days when Westerns were king; recommended as good entertainment with a message.

Good start, stupid ending.
Glenn Ford was a gifted actor, especially in westerns, and comedies, and cop movies. In this story which started well, ended, for those of us who expect wild western shootouts, it to be exactly that, it ended badly. In his first and what turned out to be his last draw and shoot gun fight at close range, he shoots down two hired gunmen, and opens a church in which he the noted gunman, it turns out is also to be a preacher. Okay so far so good, but that is the beginning of its falling apart, at least for me. I bestowed the 3 stars for his acting, his sense of humor, and his always cool approach to evil. Then, at least in my book, it begins to unravel into vast unlikeliness, and making me wonder whose foolish idea was it to make the ending so childish.I won't spoil it for you, but I thought the ending was unjust, impossible and stupid. It would never happen, and to my knowledge of the old west, never did. The ending was an insult to the talents against glowing and large reputation of one of a hall of fame western actors Glenn Ford. Any way hats off to Ford for carrying the last several minutes of a silly finish, which in moments makes the hero become the victim of the writers or directors.

The Rating of the movie
We had watched the TV version of “Heaven with a Gun” so we thought it would be great to add the dvd to our personal collection.Wrong! thankfully the TV version was rated PG, but the DVD version wasn’t rated and having young grandkids that love to watch westerns with us decided that it was not appropriate for them to watch!!

A Superior western film!
One of a select number of exceptional westerns. Glenn Ford's performance is one of his best. The film has a somewhat authentic feel to it andthe supporting performances are right-on-trsget, especially that of Noah Beery. Moves well and is quite touching at times. Highly recommended.Touches on biogotry well and projects sensitivity and humanity quite well. Exciting and moves at a very good pace. Supoerior on many levels including photography theme music and direction.

Glenn Ford is at his best and in his element in Heaven With a Gun
Glenn Ford is at his best and in his element in Heaven With a Gun. I always thought he was under appreciated and never got the respect and recognition he so richly deserved. Even though Glenn Ford is no longer with us I'm so glad we can still enjoy his work. In the near future I'm planning on purchasing Glenn in 2 other outstanding westerns such as The Violent Men and The Sheepman.

Heaven with a gun
I have waiting a long time for this movie to come out on a DVD format, and it was worth the wait. Glenn Ford has always been one of my favorite actors. He can play comedy as well as a serious part. This movie and the Sheepman are two of his many westerns I like best. These movies are tame compared to the western of C.E., but they had a good story and you could believe the character.

GLENN FORD'S FINEST WESTERN PERFORMANCE - A GREAT WESTERN PEDIGREE
Glenn Ford neither looks suited to, nor equipped for westerns, yet he started his whole career with one way back in in 1938, and this one - HEAVEN WITH A GUN over thirty years later - is mindful of his first, called HEAVEN WITH A BARBED WIRE FENCE. There are also delicious references in this film that his character may just be the same one as his bandit in 1957's 3:10 TO YUMA.Despite being as unlikely a westerner as Richard Widmark and perhaps even Alan Ladd, like those gentlemen he has one of the very best pedigrees in the motion picture western, and PUTS HIS ALL into them. This one stands on his performance, in which his gunslinger-turned-troubleshooter cleric reacts in the right way, at the right time, with insurmountable strength and reliability, just as the Duke always did. Not least emotionally also. Its post-production does not seem to be of the time - but is the only element of the venture that seems passe, belonging to the fifties. The remainder of the picture is a seeringly tough, often graphic and vicious western - befitting the onset of the 1970s - which is offset by Ford's correcting actions, even his last gesture which is to overturn a cattle baron's march of torture and destruction with a show of unified peace (not as soppy as it sounds - in these days of Peace and Love - in its execution on screen). In common with Glenn Ford's other overlooked MGM western of the time, DAY OF THE EVIL GUN (which was as sharp for 1968 as any of Clint Eastwood's genre re-bootings, and eons ahead of the dreadful HANG 'EM HIGH), Ford's performance would be impossible to improve upon.

Heaven with a gun warner archive r1 us import
Just love this film saw this as a kid on the box as a kid and at that time was shocked by the violence.Glen ford as apreacher who comes to a small town to bring religion and the good book. But has a past.starting with a nasty hanging of an indian sheepman by cattleman david carradine and sidekick. The preacher trys to bring peace between the two factions but violence begets violence. Each side retaliates and escalates the situation.By the end ford has to decide wether to solve the situation with his faith in god or his faith in his gun.Good performances by Glen ford one of my favourite under rated american actors, john anderson of soldier blue infamy, david carradine before kung fu,Barbera hershey and Noah beery of the rockford files.all because this was made in 1969 this has rape and some of the violence is sadistic in nature. The only down side is the rape is treated some what lightly and does not show the true gravity of the cost on a woman.2.35.1 ratio mono soundtrack some print damage.and just a trailer.
