Great fire starting tool to have
I’ve never used a fire piston before and I am not a professional or amature survivalist. I am just a guy who is putting together a earthquake/bug out bag for emergency situations. So I am stocking it with a couple different things to make fire and learning how to use each of them. The construction on all the parts of this fire piston are solid built and it is very easy to use. I read and watched how to use this piston. There is definitely a technique to using this tool. When you plunged the piston and remove the piston it needs to be fast. It is essential to get that ember. Using some home made char cloth (another technique defiantly needed to know) I was able to make an ember the first time I tried. I tried it a second time just to make sure I had the technique down. The seconds and third times did not make an ember, it took a third time with a re-position of the char cloth to get that ember. So yes this is not a perfect, works every time way to start a fire. This is definitely a great back up fire starting method. Some of the advantages of this fire piston to other primitive fire starting tools are it can be used over and over a lot more then other tools, it thrives in windy conditions, and can be used in wet conditions to get an ember. It’s also cool to know of this way to make a fire. I like that it has a capsule to store tinder and spare O-ring and I will definitely get some spare O-rings. Always have spare parts for equipment. It will last forever with proper maintenance.

Nice piston
I bought this last year and have used it three times and it worked every time. With good char cloth no issues, just need to remember to add a little grease to that o-ring to get the compression right and your good. This ting is also very well made not going to break anytime soon that for sure.

Perfect for packing in your EDC pouch
Thi fire piston is small and perfect for packing in your EDC pouch. Works great i have several different kinds this one has a compartment on the top for keeping dry tinder like a char cloth roll cones with extra O- Rings, small container of lube. Well constructed design. Has a groove that holds tinder very well. Works almost every time. Very easy to clean when you t unscrew the relief valve. Liked it so much i purchased another one. Don't let the size fool you. A must haxe item for the outdoos enthusiast. Great product for a great price. The more ways you can learn to start a fire the more confident you will be, you may need it. Great product. Thanks

Works but impractical
The item works fine once you get the hang of it, but overall this is not a practical survival tool. It is reasonably well constructed although the O-rings loosen up quickly and get junked up with charred material if you are using char cloth.I have managed to get an ember a few times but it does involve a learning curve. If you are practiced with one I imagine it could be handy, but if you are not then you are better off with a ferro rod or similar device as a back up to lighters or matches. For myself, however, I would rather dedicate that learning time to working with friction fires such as bow drills than what is really not much more than an impractical nick-knack (in my opinion of it, anyway). The other thing to be aware of is that Going Gear's return policy states that items must be new and unused for returns. That means that you are unlikely to be able to return it if you buy it and similarly decide that it is not a practical tool. So weigh your purchase against the possibility that you may not be able to return it if you don't like it. I am currently awaiting approval for my return and will update this review if it turns out I can actually return it. I'm not holding my breath, however. It's construction and the prompt shipping merit about four stars, but since it is so impractical I can really only give it two so that people will put some serious thought into whether or not they really want to buy this. It is not easy to use and can be a little tricky even once you get the hang of it. For a fun fire toy to experiment with or as a curiosity it's nice, but there are many items that would go in my pack as back up fire-starting tools long before I even considered this fire piston.

Nice quality. It takes some practice
Nice quality. It takes some practice. Don't go out into the field relying solely on this to start a fire without getting the hang of it first. Make sure you have enough char cloth handy as well.

Top quality fire piston
The item is excellent quality and it worked right out of the box using "stone tinder" (ebay). I got an ember at the first try and even did not hit a hard surface. I just compressed the piston quickly between my hands. Another thing I like besides the outstanding quality is the cap on the other side of the cylinder. By removing the cap you are able to clean the cylinder easily. I did a lot of research on fire pistons and I think that this is the best one you can find at the moment. Last but not least: The price of this piston is just unbeatable. There is nothing better you can get for the buck than this one.
