Baby Faces (Little Nugget) Board book – January 22, 2001

We had another copy of this book to read to our grandkids at bedtime. It is always a favorite from a few months old to two years. It is a sturdy little book, but we wanted a backup copy as more little one have come along. It is simple but really grabs their attention as they look at the pictures of the other children in it.

This would have received 0 stars if that option was available.Out of 17 pictures of children, all but two are caucasion. White, white, white.There is one picture of an Asian baby and one picture of a mixed baby. Well, I'm assuming the baby is mixed, but it could just be a darker caucasian baby.I adopted twins transracially. There are no babies in this book that look even remotely like them.I had gotten this book years ago and just found it again when I was looking through books to read to my babies. When I looked through this one, I decided to throw it out. It's a great way to make a child who is not white as white can be feel like they don't fit.The pictures of the children in the book are cute and sweet, but there is NO way that I am going to allow my precious babies to look at this book and, as they get older, wonder why there aren't any children who have a similar appearance to them. They are going to have enough questions as it is. I don't want to introduce more unecessarily.Very poorly done in my opinion.But, if you are a family that is all white, living in a town that is not diverse and have no wish to expose your children to anyone who looks slightly different than them, this may be the book for you.

This is a cute little board book of baby faces. On each page it lists an emotion matching the baby's expression. "Happy, keep on smiling. Sad, let's wipe away those tears." Both of my daughters love this book. My seven-month-old smiles every time I read it to her. My 2-year-old has it memorized and reads it all the time. This is a perfect baby shower gift -- it's not as well known as some of the other books out there, but no one will be disappointed. It is our absolute favorite book!
