Though uneven and definitely not for everyone, "Adventures" is an influential album that ambient fans will love
The Orb's "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" was essentially one of if not THE first ambient house album (it at least inspired other artists and (somewhat) popularized the genre - "Little Fluffy Clouds" is a very appealing track). It is, admittedly, a little uneven. If you've only heard the song "Little Fluffy Clouds", be prepared for a quick change of pace. The rest of the album is very ambient and very experimental, but for ambient fans and the open-minded it's very interesting stuff to listen to. My personal favorites are the first three tracks, and the rest I don't think are as fun to listen to as a whole (they're definitely very good, though). It's not ambient in a traditional sense - there's definitely a beat in most of the songs which help keep them accessible. What's also great is how you're essentially getting two albums for the price of one (actually more like the price of 1.5 albums)! If it weren't for this fact and its influence on the world of music, I probably would've given it a 4.5. Ambient and electronica fans will definitely love it, though. Even if most people won't like the album as a whole, they'll most likely enjoy "Little Fluffy Clouds". Highly recommended!Highlights include:the entire album!

The start of something new......
This album created a movement thats been slowly evolving ever since. Comparable to Future Sound of London's 'Lifeforms' or 'Dead Cities' this journey into musical bliss is layered with beautiful yet strange samples and textures found only in a handful of electronic artists* ( *see: Future Sound of London , Boards of Canada , Aphex Twin , 2 Lone Swordsmen, Jean-Michel Jarre). As one reviewer already said this release was way ahead of its time. This album is a mix of different styles from ambient to dub to acid house which at some points is more dance oriented than strictly ambient. With almost 2 hours of music on 2 cds this might seem long but does it ever fly by. I enjoyed this album as a whole rather than just having favourite tracks. If you're into sci-fi and space exploration you deffinately need to buy this. I recommend smoking a spliff and sitting back in a lawnchair looking up at the stars and letting your subconcious take over. Its hard to believe its been 14 years since its conception . Only open minds need apply.

Top of the Clouds crew...
One of the great ambient/debut albums from Dr. Alex & his merry pranksters. Its all here for the taking; space, dub, electronics, dance, (gentle) freak-outs, come-down lullabys, etc.

The real Orb, not the trumped substitute.
My first encounter with the orb (sort of like Donny's with the Sauds the other day) - but doubtlessly more nutritious and less campy. Though I am more familiar with "classical" electronics (Stockhausen, Henry) and Tangerine Dream, I still found this album very interesting and worthwhile.

This is definitely one of the best music purchases I have ever made and I h ave made many over the years. If you love ORB, you will be thrilled with this deluxe edition. The remixes are just sensational. The third disc alone is worth the price. If you have a good system, you will be just amazed at the quality of the sound!

As deluxed edition's go the Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld is the best I have come across. From the packaging to the bonus disc, giving a more complete experience and quaulity of sound. I already owned the album and decided to buy the deluxe edition after reading the previous "Excellent Reissue" review. Highly recommended and a must for anyone who's interested in this genre of music .

Progressing or going nowhere?
In general I thought this was a good album, but they failed to progress or experiment. Each track sounded like they found one good loop to work with, but they were afraid to stray from that one particular clip. I just think with the talent they seem to possess they could have gotten a little more creative and made it a bit crazier. Anyways this seems like it would be a better listen if you were on some good psychadelics.

Adventurous
Debut relese from this dance orientated duo. Anthemic swirling keyboard's dominate the general sound of each track and are intertwinned with other electronic noises spoken soundtrack soundbites and drums Not my favourite genre of music and not my favourite dance band but l brought the CD because l wanted to challenge myself by listening to something different. IF You like dance then this band certainly deliver the goods when it comes to delivering good guality dance orientated music. My only gripe is l think the music can tend to sound a bit self indulgent at times and l admit it did not always hold my attention but l don't regret the purchase as l knew what to expect from this band and got what l expected. So no real complaints there

Dr LX Patterson's tumultuous first album
This is a landmark album. Released in '91. At the time, we were raving hard! and along came the pioneers of Ambient House, The Orb. We were chilled to perfection. The seminal track of this adventure was A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld. Fantastic track, with the timeless Minnie Riperton sample from Lovin' You. I've listened to this album for a thousand years. I love it. I love recognising samples used, and learning about others, decades later (I don't always like knowing everything right now!) It's a great first album. Followed by my favourite Orb album, UFOrb.Treat yourself and buy both. You'll become a nut like me, who genuinely has been a massive fan of most of following 30 years of their music. And the "their" has included many, many huge and talented musicians, DJ producers, singers and artists.

The Orb revived & revisited – 3-disc special
The Orb were a rather quirky presence on the dance scene of the 1990s, and this debut album is their most enduring work.‘Perpetual Dawn’ and ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ are probably the most memorable titles for those who were there in the 1990s, witty and funny in that gentle Orb-style, but the whole collection may be played as ambient and non-intrusive background music in almost any situation. The extensive sampling cuts bring back the eclectic soundscape of the era for those-who-remember.This release comes with an excellent bonus disk which includes the famous 20-minute John Peel session in 1989 (the first of six Peel sessions through the 1990s, and the best). The bonus disk also includes several re-mixes at least as good as the originals.

A Classic whichever edition
For me this has to be a 5 star rating. Nostalgia for my student days aside, listening to it 20 years on it is still fresh, absorbing, vibrant and a complete listening experience either in the background while you work or study or to sit and fully concentrate on. TOABTU is a classic album and I don't think that I can add much to the descriptions and plaudits already eloquently expressed by other reviewers. The basic album has been remastered, not the the old one really needed it, but the sound for me is crisper and more vibrant. The extra disc is a great addition to the package with some .If you want to explore electronica, ambient techno or chill out music this is highly recommended.
