Duran Duran - Classic Albums: Rio

Her Name is Rio
and she dances on the sand. Love to see and hear how these classic albums from the past were created from the artist's and engineer's perspective. These are out there online now for free now, but with commercials, and I am already over saturated with commercial interruptions so I can go back and re-watch this well-done series at my leisure without them now. Thank you Eagle Rock!

Superb Overview of a Seminal Album
Here presented is an excellent look at the young band, Duran Duran, and their second album "Rio". Discussed are how they made the sounds, and the videos, in about equal measure. All band members are interviewed, and there are some interesting revelations and outtakes. The documentary could take slightly better organization, but nonetheless it was excellent and highly enjoyable for fans of the band. "Rio", the second album, and appearing on the scene just when MTV was blossoming, was a critical album for the 1980s, and which set a pattern not merely for Duran Duran, but for other bands as well. Even a style that transcended Rock itself. (...) In concluding thoughts I believe it was well summarized: "...Sometimes one can overthink matters [and be unsuccessful]... while other times one can do what one wants and feels best at, and strike a chord..." This is exactly what happened with "Rio". It had a little trouble, throughout the decade in the States, being recognized as a great and seminal album. Yet I think that there is no one that will gainsay its importance now, as this documentary reveals: a credit to all band members, and its producers.

A MUST HAVE FOR ALL DURANIES!!!
This DVD Documentary on the FAB FIVE'S greatest album of all time....RIO....is a must have for all DURANIES!!! I'll admit, my first one had the "skipping" issues and flaws (bought it at Virgin Megastore), but once I purchased it through Amazon, I had no further problems! It is such a wonderful "look back" at a great album (my personal favorite out of all their albums). The guys look great and give some wonderful insight to the songs and the music. My only "down side" to the disc was that they did not discuss every song on the album(apparently for time purposes). Two of my favorites that were not discussed were "Lonely in your Nightmare" and "Last Chance on the Stairway". I guess since they were not "hits', they were passed by. To bad....those are great songs! But, the disc is wonderful and it is loaded with alot of information and history that every Duranie can sink their teeth into! So buy it and enjoy.........I love mine!!!! Bye...Donna "RHO" Rasco/Yucaipa, CA

Love the Music
Very happy with this purchase. While I would not call myself a fan I really like the band and enjoyed learning more about how their album came about. I also loved seeing the videos and interviews from bad members!

Insights from the Band
It's cool getting insights into some of the tracks from Simon, Nick, John...and Roger even speaks, quite a bit! Too bad about Andy not participating, for whatever the varied reasons, but I'm glad they acknowledged his work.I wish they had covered all of the songs on the album. It might have been interesting to get commentary from some of their other contemporaries too, or maybe more time with the guys. I'm not sure why Bob Geldof got as much screen time as he did.All in all, though, it was very fascinating and worth adding to any Durannie's collection.Unlike the reviewer who had problems with their disc, mine played fine.

This is a great documentary on how the Rio album was made
This is a great documentary on how the Rio album was made, as well as its impact on how we see it (back then as well as today). Featuring flashbacks of Rio album footage, we get to see HOW Rio was put together, and what enabled Duran Duran to achieve its success at that time. The documentary features interviews and footage of the producers and managers who helped Rio achieve its success, but the majority of the documentary features band members discussing their memories of making the album, including studio cameos of how they achieved the particular sounds that made Rio happen.

Missing Important Information...
The very important thing that this DVD is missing is participation from Andy. They could have at least have talked to him and gotten his take on things. I was really interested in hearing what he thought about things, the musical inspirations he had while putting "Rio" together and everything else. I miss him.

Making an 80's Classic...!
This album defined the sound of an era (early 1980's). MIDI was new and nothing was standardized yet with regards to studio gear, software, etc... This DVD gives the viewer a glimpse into those early days of 'hybrid productions' between new electronic MIDI (and NON-MIDI) instruments and traditional Rock and Disco bands... With the technology and software that we have today running our DAW's, you can just imagine pulling your hair out back then attempting to sync, record and edit tracks that only take us a few seconds and a few mouse clicks to accomplish, took them days (sometimes weeks) back then...

Rio Class 101
for any fan of Duran Duran will probably have a copy of Rio in his/her collection....well this is the perfect add on to that collection...it is an informative guide to the process of the making of Rio and how the sounds were achieved, and why North America received a "different version" of the album....Simon, Nick and Roger take you on a "guided tour" of how the album was made, how certain sounds were created to be the sound of Duran Duran, and on shoot video locations (Sri Lanka), which was a grueling experience, according to Nick.there is quite a bit of bonus features on this dvd as well...I highly recommend this dvd...especially if you have recently purchased their 2 disk special edition of Rio....
