Batman: Road to No Man's Land Vol. 1 (Batman: No Man's Land)

Solid Sequel to Cataclysm and a Good Prequel for No Man's Land
Volume One of Road to No Man's Land is a solid, intriguing read that sees Batman mourning the devastation of Gotham that occurs in the Cataclysm story line. This is a direct sequel to Cataclysm and serves as a prequel to No Man's Land; the book focuses on Batman's efforts to locate missing survivors and deal with a crippled city infrastructure. While Volume Two of the prequel series is a more direct prequel to No Man's Land (Batman attempting to convince the nation not to cut off the ruined Gotham, the city being sealed off and abandoned), this one is a great character study to Bruce dealing with a disaster for which there is no culprit. There is no villain to punish, only rebuilding to begin. Overall a great read and a must have for fans of Cataclysm. If you are only looking to start No Man's Land, this volume isn't as much of a must-read since all you really need to know is that there was an earthquake and the city is essentially condemned.

... or two lead up books for NML made a great addition to my collection
This first or two lead up books for NML made a great addition to my collection. Collecting bits of the story from all of the Batman family books of the time this is a pretty good book to read in prep for the NML saga.

Great Book. Great Shape.
This book was exactly what I expected. It keeps me from having to go to my collection to keep opening the individual books. It is just so sad that this is a true story. I feel awful for these people.

Good quality
This collection covers every story of this arc. This volume actually has volume 1 and 2 of the original collection

After math
So a few short years ago we in Colorado had a flood, and that was bad. But anything that happens in Gotham is worse

Another collection of stories connected by the central event of earthquake.
The back cover states that this volume collects the full Aftershock story. Well, there is no story in Aftershock. Just like Cataclysm it's a bunch of short stories all dealing with the obvious things related to the earthquake. The death toll is now higher and disillusioned people start leaving the ruins of the city in droves. This is another four hundred pages of excruciatingly slow buildup and there is another four hundred pages volume before we get to the actual No Man's Land. Seven months of real time has passed between publications and the cynic in me says they're milking it a bit too heavily.

Not worth the price
If you're a fan of Batman, but no a completist I would advice not to bought it. It might add some data to the NML saga, but its not essential to read it

A mixed bag.
This isn’t the actual ‘Road To No Mans Land’ like another reviewer said, this is this Aftershock.I only read one or two of these issues when they came out and I read the whole No Mans Land saga, but besides the first story, this is all new territory for me.Well, many artists, writers and styles. The first story with Clayface and Mr Freeze was alright except for the art.Robins bowl haircut and tiny eye mask/glasses?The first story also builds up for what is a depressing set of stories with A Long Slow Death. It was refreshing to see how No Mans Land effected regular citizens of Gotham and that is my favourite story and it being so damn tragic. It’s a mixed bag for me with these stories.I forgot how many titles Batman had out at one point or another. The art is varied from one artist to another and same with The writers. It’s more or less essential to the No Mans Land saga but you could pick up No Mans Land vol 1 and know what’s happened, the one significant point of this book is the bridge collapsing.Although these are a mixed bag of stories, they are just that. But if filler to help along the main event, but they are enjoyable enough, just very mixed. If you’re a die hard completist like me, I’d recommend it.Even if you’re not a hardcore die hard, it’s worth it for a ‘A Long Slow Death’ alone. If you’re wanting to go straight to No Mans Land then get the first four volumes of the new editions and read one of the best Batman crossover events. The paper is alright in this trade paperback, glossy but not too thick sadly. It’s a no thrills addition and you don’t get any variants or sketches but it does make for varied reading. Thanks for reading

Read this on Kindle
Wow, I had read lots of reviews and anecdotes in the past about this storyline, and I have to admit, it does not disappoint. It is so atmospheric even as I was reading it at times you feel the claustrophobia of being trapped under the earth. One thing that has puzzled me so far - why hasn't the JLA come to help, especially Superman?! If there is one storyline a Batfan needs to read, it's Road to No Mans Land and the following volumes.

quando ancora
Quando ancora Batman raccontava bellissime storie.Prima di scadere, come negli ultimi anni, in beceri raccontini per dodicenni.
