Don't judge a book by its cover/title
The title is awful and the hardback cover is tacky (and stock photo), but the book is actually really good! Everyone even remotely interested in the Bible needs to read this book. It is full of cultural and linguistic context that really makes the Bible seem relevant, I'd bet even to those just curious about the book that has had such an impact on "Western" culture and civilization. I've heard so many talks/sermons/homilies/etc on the Bible stories, and there was a lot of information in here that I'd never heard before, and a lot of it was actually correcting common misconceptions. This would be great to read as a companion to, or before, reading the Bible, as well as just on its own if the Bible itself is just too overwhelming (it's ok - we've all been there).Highly, highly, highly recommend.

This AMAZING book will open your eyes to reading the Bible in a whole new way!
This book is an easy read----but don't let that fool you---it is filled with so much information and background and theology about the Bible that you will learn something new on every page. I LOVE this book. It would make a great book for a Scripture Study group as well. I have been doing a lot of studying already and STILL I am amazed at how much I have learned from this book. A great book for a beginner who wants to know more about the Bible as well as someone who might think they already know the Bible stories.

No footnotes or cites.
I love his Bible Timeline and the Bible Study I’m doing at my church so I bought this thinking it would be good for my brother since Jeff has an historical approach to the Bible and my brother is a history buff but no cites or footnotes. He would never read it. Good companion book to his timeline but it would be better IMHO to just reread the Bible.

A valuable resource no doubt about it
This was a fantastic compliment to the "Unlocking the Mysteries of the Bible" course we just completed. It really helps to supply background for the origins of words and concurrent events happening at the time that shed light on the meaning of passages. By reading this first and then reading the assigned Bible passages I got far more out of the text and the story than I ever would have reading scripture alone and perhaps most importantly it helped me to avoid misinterpretations that could have led me down a completely different road with the stories I was reading.

Love it!
Definitely makes it easier for me to understand. I kept trying to read the Bible even the teenager version and I still was struggling. This makes it easier for me to understand. I would definitely recommend this especially if you are new to the Faith.

Great overview of the bible
This is a great book for people who have tried many times to "read" the bible but have given up, or those who want to begin to look at the story of the Old and Net Testament in a comprehensive way. It is a very, very well written overview. I have looked at other books (e.g, Idiots Guide to the Bible) to get a sense, but this book is filled with great insights. For example, nobody explained to me that in the ancient kingdoms of the middle-east, that the queen was NOT the wife of the king, but his mother (kings often had many wives). This explains why Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has such a prominent role in the bible and in the Catholic Church. The whole book is written as a novel, as if someone sat down and explained to you the rhyme and reason for all the events in the bible starting with Adam and Eve through the end. This is not an academic book, but a very down-to-earth story.

Excellent tool for understanding
I am about 1/3 of the way through this book. I wish I had had it when doing the actual bible study with Jeff Cavins last year. The bible study gives the big picture of salvation history, and this book delves in more detail the who, what, and why. It is important to know the original meaning of the Greek or Hebrew words used in scripture as well as the cultural and historical meaning behind the event, without which many events seem arbitrary. There are many connections I would never think of, many subtleties I would never guess at that are actually important to understanding what God is trying to teach us in these stories and histories. Everything is important--each word, each phrase, the order of stories, the meaning behind the detail. For example, I have always skipped through the laws and details of the Levitical priesthood (boring), but one of the things the details of God's command for the ornate garments (details of stones and their colors on the breastplate of the priest)and materials used in the building of the ark, etc...is to show us that the very best is to be used to worship and glorify God. Hence the importance the Catholic Church places on the beauty of her churches, priestly robes, altar, tabernacle, etc...is clearly indicated by Scripture, God Himself! A barren, plain church (as was frequently built during 60's,70's, and 80's in the name of giving to the poor)does not glorify God and does nothing to bring hearts and minds to Him in worship, thereby neither serving God, nor supporting the people in becoming the charitable people God wants them to be through true worship. Truly fascinating, very good reading, and makes me love to read the Bible.

An Outstanding Overview of Salvation History!
I just finished reading this outstanding book. It opened my eyes to many details from the scriptures which I have never seen before in this light. It helped me tie together important concepts which, honestly, I never understood before. The book is written in an easy to read format with plenty of notes so you can go see for yourself. An excellent overview of salvation history. I am looking forward to reading the Great Adventure Study Bible now knowing this information. Thank you and well done.
