Warrantee denied by Honda
My Honda motor was very hard to crank. When it did crank it ran fine for about an hour and 15 minutes then seized up. Took it to an authorized Honda marine dealer. They filed claim with honda which was denied on the basis of hydro lock and bent Piston rod caused by customer (me) overfilling with oil. I did not overfill the oil. There was no higher Authority for an appeal. A polite representative named Cesar explained the situation but offered no recourse other that Honda would show “good faith” by paying for parts if I payed for labor (Approximating cost of a new motor). I have since found this motor is manufactured in China. Live and learn. First honda product I have ever had problems with. I will continue to buy other honda products but will stay away from this cheap china product masquerading as a honda engine. My next stop is To buy a 4 stroke or 2 stroke Tohatsu 2.5 hp motor manufactured in Japan. Will use the honda as a boat anchor.

Do not buy ---
The motor is VERY LOUD ! Forget having a conversation while using - even at low throttle.Plastic everything - even the propeller.I got 12 hours out of mine and now the centrifical clutch has given out.I have read a lot of reviews and I see that many other people are not happy with this very cheap knockoff.

I love it, I hate it.
We have purchased this motor in 2018 and have been using it on our small dinghy since then maybe for some 10 hours of motoring each season. It is light weight and easy to handle, so there is no crane needed to attach it to our dinghy or back to the our sailboat. It is a four stroke air cooled so we don’t have to worry about cooling. Those are the positive comments. On the negative side: It is not reliable. For whatever reason we go for an outing and occasionally (maybe every second trip) the motor just stalls after some 10 to 30 min running. Just out of the blue. We were always able to get it going again, but I haven’t figured out why this happens. It just leaves us with this bad feeling every time we use it. Of course it is also loud and not very powerful, but this is to be expected from a 2.3 air cooled motor.

Don't Buy!
This motor is Chinese junk, apparently this is the only Honda outboard that is manufactured in China. I bought 2 of them about 2 years ago because of the warranty. Have only really used one of them, had to take to the shop about 5 times in two years. Water kept getting in the carburetor apparently a flaw in the cap, according to the dealer. Also, once when the engine was tilted up on the boat oil leaked into the crank-case and they had to drain, was covered by the warranty at lease. Engine is also very loud. I sold it a few days ago and bought a Tohatsu 3.5 new, for $800 at the local dealer. Much quieter and a little more power, I use on a 14 ft. Jon boat. Hopefully the Tohatsu is a better product. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this engine.

Water in engine problem
I didn't buy from Amazon. I bought from a friend who had to have the carburetor rebuilt twice (water in gas).. It turns out there's some defect in the engine cover which lets rain get into the fuel tank. I put two kitchen garbage bags over the motor after each use.. Problem solved.. Starts each season.. First pull.

Leaking gas cap. No help from Honda USA!
I’d like to give the motor a higher rating, but leaking gas cap and no help from Honda USA it gets a 1. My motor is not in the recalled batch, so Honda USA can’t replace a $11 cap. My recommendation is not to buy this motor. Sorry Honda USA, I gave you opportunity to stand behind your equipment.Ended up Honda did send a new gas cap which did not leak. As for the motor it is light and moves my canoe and small boat well. Engine is loud at full throttle. First summer with the engine was good.

Water get in the gas tank
Im a full time cruiser. live and travel on a sailboat. We purchased this engine for our small hard dinghy. its light and when it runs it runs great. When it doenst want to start you will be using the oars. Somehow water is getting into the fuel tank. there is a valve on the gas cap that supposed to keep the water out when it rains. even when it is closed water still gets into the gas. if i can get a few more season out it i will buy a yamaha next

New Carb after 3 seasons (update: needs 3rd carb)
I thought buying Honda meant buying a premium product. Not the case. When I went to use the motor this season it would only run with the choke on and throttle 50%, anything else and it would stall. After dismantling, my mechanic said the carb was toast. I'm about to get the engine back and hopefully will be ok, for another season or two. A new carb was NOT expected. The gas cap has become stripped, and no longer 'clicks' when tightening. If I tilt the engine when beaching my dinghy, gas leaks out the top if I have a full tank. The engine has always been noisy and runs rougher than I expected. I won't be buying another ...UPDATE: one year since last 2-star review. 2nd carburetor has rusted out needs replacing. I’m giving this engine to my mechanic for free and getting something else. I downgraded my 2-star to 1-star. Junk product.
