Very good book -- has answered alot of questions. I have enjoyed looking at the beautiful knives and it has given me a lot of ideas.

I was very impressed with this book, knowing almost nothing about knife making before reading it. The pictures and discussion of various steels and handle materials- including exotics such as whale tooth and fossil mammoth ivory- are excellent and inspirational. Artistic photos of collector knives- on almost every page- are awesome. I recommend it highly as a "coffee table" book for anyone interested in knives, or just in fine craftsmanship; I recommend it especially to the novice reader and beginning craftsperson who wants to make a knife working from a pre-manufactured "blank" blade, and even an expert might learn something from it. I find something new every time I go back to it. Information on mechanical sharpening devices was especially helpful. I would want to read a more specialized book on blacksmithing before attempting to make my own blade.It did not have information on balancing knife blades and handles, which to me is an important subject in creating a practical utilitarian knife. There was not a great deal on forging blades. It did not cover fancy hilts such as "spinners" and "D-hilts," or titanium finishes, but no one book will have everything.The only other criticism I have is that the binding was somewhat fragile and cracked easily, which is really too bad for such a fine text.

I really like this book. I bought it as a gift for my eldest son who collects folding knives. It has some lovely illustrations and great detail about the styles. The added instruction at the rear of the book on how to make your own tang knife added a little that was unexpected.

Was a gift to my son and he liked it very much - well illustrated - good seller.
