Her Permanent Record (Amelia Rules!)

An excellent storyteller
Jimmy Gownley has an excellent grasp of childhood and has never let it go. And most remarkably, seems to understand girls as well as boys. A rare trait in a man. Most men think we're a seperate species, but Jimmy understands we're the same, mostly; it's just that girls are a little freer to express themselves than boys are allowed to do. I've followed his comics for years now and he never disappoints. As long as I'm able, I'll continue to get his books (for myself and the kids in my school.) :-) (Keep your books in print, dear, so I can keep getting fresh copies for the kids in my library. They love your books to death!)

Fitting end to the popular series
The popular Amelia Rules! series comes to an end, after eight volumes. It's a nice end that lets readers know that Amelia Louise McBride's adventures have just begun and they can imagine what she does next. It's a volume than can be read alone, but loses some emotional resonance for new readers.HER PERMANENT RECORD begins with things going swimmingly for Amelia. The pretend-superhero group she belongs to spawns a national trend and becomes cool. Her aunt Tanner has returned to being a rockstar. Amelia and Rhonda are set to compete with the cheerleaders in the Guacamole Bowl. But then a tell-all book causes Tanner to disappear and Amelia must find a way to get her aunt back.I felt like Tanner's actions were a little out of character, but Amelia's mom does point out that Amelia worships her aunt and might not be aware of some of her flaws. And Jimmy Gownley has set the Amelia Rules! series through Amelia's eyes. (As is obvious by her name in big letters on the cover.) But aside from that, I liked the story. It's big, fitting for the finale, but heartfelt. And the interstitial panels about Amelia's permanent record at Joe McCarthy Elementary are hilarious.Gownley's art is reminiscent of Charles Schulz. (Fittingly, Gownley openly acknowledges Schulz as an influence.) I think his style will appeal to both kids and their parents. It's clean but exaggerated, with understated colors. Most pages are 9-panel, but there are also some really fun layouts.HER PERMANENT RECORD is a funny and delivers a great story about friends, family, loyalty, and forgiveness. It's a good story and a fitting end to a beloved series.

The best of them all.
Amelia Rules has, for ten years, been a graphic novel oddity, due it's insane fun antics of Amelia McBride and her friends, matched with an to incredible depth to the stories and characters. Amelia and her friends have grown from tweens to almost-teens in this story, and life doesn't get any easier. Tanner, Amelia's aunt, has returned to her previous musical success (think Debbie Gibson), but hangers on from the past are pulling her down.Amelia must help bring Tanner back (mentally and physically) to what's important, while helping her cheerleading squad, members of the super hero club, and others. Someone is let down in all the craziness, but it won't be the reader.I have have seen kids at the local library read though multiple volumes in one reading-- so you might want to see if there was a way to pick them all up at once-- a great collection for voracious readers. However, these are easily readable out of order, as they are self contained enough to avoid any confusion. The art is clean, and deceptively simple, but this allows for the young reader to better identify with Amelia, Reggie, Pajamaman, and others. The only thing to add is -- Amelia Rules!
