Superb Show - Missing 2 Minutes
This was/is truly a great live album with a great capture of the Tubes' theatrical rock & fun. The Tubes milked everything out of themselves and the audience in this show and they laid it down superbly on record. One thing captured especially well was the finale sequence of Stand Up And Shout/White Punks On Dope, which builds slowly to a wonderfully delirious frenzy that left no energy unspent. And, thus, the reason for the reduction by one star on this otherwise 5-star CD release. The CD version, in order to fit onto one CD, cut out about 2 minutes from the LP and about 1 minute of that is out of this final sequence. Now, most of what was cut was audience response between songs and the final fade, something that would never had been missed had it never been captured on LP. But as the rest of the record shows, the between-song energy is part of the show and the full LP version has that extra piece of build-up of excitement to the fantastic finale - so the CD is somewhat a lesser experience than on the LP. Given that it is the only CD release of this great album, I of course have it and still highly recommend it because it still sounds great. I would also love to see any deluxe release of this show that at least could restore the full 2 LP version, but in the meantime, I leave the mp3 of my LP on my player instead of the CD. This may be a nit, but I thought it useful to give at least a heads up since I did not see anyone else make mention of the missing time. It does keep me on the lookout for any restoration of the full original 2LP version.

Tubes - 'What Do You Want From Live' (Universal) 4 1/2 stars
Initially came out as a pricey two-lp vinyl release in 1978. I remember listening to most of this album in record stores that I did frequent - back in the day. It's been so long - but I am relieved to get it on CD reissue. Very nice. Show took place at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in November, 1977. This was, of course The Tubes - in their prime. Tracks that Fee Waybill and crew are primarily known for - are here - performed in their full glory - "Don't Touch Me There" (perhaps their anti-romance anthem?), "Mondo Bondage", the endearing "Smoke (La Vie En Fumer)" and their humorous "White Punks On Dope". But other cuts that (I'm now) remembering are "What Do You Want From Life?", their somewhat memorable crime medley of "Sound Effect - Siren / Theme From Dragnet / Theme From Peter Gunn / Theme From Perry Mason / Theme From The Untouchables", their Beatles cover "I Saw Her Standing There" and the upbeat "Boy Crazy". It's like been so - very long since I've heard this live Tubes album in it's entirety. Most definitely, a should-have. Oh, plus I had completely forgotten about the hero of the day - Quay Lewd.

Great example of a Tubes show!
I saw the Tubes in their heyday back in the mid-70s, and this live album captures exactly what I remember of their concert.

Don't wait too long to buy older recordings
This is a great live album by one of the most unique bands I have seen in a while. I had the album and never got around to buying the CD and had to get a copy from the UK, which was great, albeit more $$ than I wanted to spend for an album 43years old. I am grateful to now have my own copy. It came intact, sooner than promised and like I said, do not wait. I paid 19.00 dollars and if it were available here in the US AND re-released, it might be less. It is amazing to see what stuff sells for especially if it is old by a band that was not selling out arenas. WPOD.

GREAT LIVE RECORDING - "FINALLY"
I saw the TUBES many times in the 70's, 80's and 90's and even in 2002 and had been waiting for this to get to CD. This is BY FAR one of the GREATEST SOUNDING LIVE RECORDINGS ever made. I was amazed back in 78 when this record came out and how good ("CLEAN") the sound is on this record. It's what a LIVE album SHOULD sound like. Even if your NOT a TUBES fan, take a little time and check this out, it's worth it. BTW, the TUBES are NOT a punk band, they are a rock-n-roll band that were WAY AHEAD of their time. They had ALOT of fun at this time (78) I agree, they were in their prime. This was right after "NOW" came out and before "REMOTE CONTROL". Also, if your looking for CLASSIC TUBE matl, be sure to check out the 1st album "THE TUBES" and "YOUNG and RICH"! Even though I could have cared less about 80's stuff, I was happy that they were making some WELL DESERVED $$!! This is a GREAT LIVE record, a MUST for TUBES fans, and ANYONE that wants to check them out, I recommend this as very good value. Have fun, it's GREAT!!

Entertaining Revelation
I've never quite understood the critical disdain for this band. It seems both their gonzo years in the 70's, and the more commercial work in the 80's, is dismissed out of hand by most mainstream "critical sources."A late comer to their early work, I found this album enjoyable, well worth purchasing if you like clever arrangements, interesting lyrics, a good dose of humor, and some fine playing, particularly on keyboards and drums. There is a surprising Zappa influence here, and it's musically far more interesting than many of the punk/pop minimalists of their day.Good choice if you are at all interested in the work on which they built their reputation, alas all but forgotten, before they cashed in their chips in the commercial vein. It's refreshing to hear some rock music, however old, with a sense of "fun" to it (God forbid!), without the endless monotonous chord changes and indistinguishable vocals that seem to make up all rock music today. Only a video disk from this era could supplant it.

Still Sounds Good To Me ...
I remember seeing the Tubes in San Francisco and Oakland back in the 70's ... it was always a good time. A few weeks ago, I saw the Tubes in Ogden, Utah ( yes, Utah ) - and, it was a really great show. So ... I went out and bought the Tubes - Live CD. I really enjoy this disc - lots of good, fun tunes. What Do You Want From Life ? Mondo Bondage, White Punks, I Was A Punk Before You etc. My only beef with this disc was ... the final mix of the lead guitar could have been better - meaning louder and more dominating on several songs. If you haven't seen the Tubes for a while ( or ever ) ... do yourself a favor and catch a show during their 2009 Tour. Have a little fun ... it's good for the soul.

"Rock 'n' Roll, they're gonna cram it down your throats!"
This was the Tubes at their wildest and wackiest! This band really knew how to put on a show. (They still do to the best of my knowledge) Wild and wacky, yes but their tuneful and well observed songs are delivered up close and personal all through this Hammersmith Odeon recorded gig. What the CD doesn't show you is the theatrical antics that Fee Waybill & co would get up to. If only this CD could magically transform into a DVD!From the hyped up tongue-in-cheek intro to the last fanfare of White Punks on Dope this CD kicks serious ass!Buy it and find out what this band was really all about instead of what you may have read somewhere. Then check out Remote Control and the Completion Backwards Principle for further enlightenment - trust me, you'll be glad you did ...

A Tubular Belle.
I've just listened to this on CD, and it takes me back to one of the best shows that I have ever seen. I witnessed it from up in the balcony at the Hammersmith Odeon, and was really blown away. As other reviewers have stated, this show needed to be filmed to get the full experience, but this CD does a great job in capturing the Tubes at their best. If you are going to see them on their upcoming tour, buy this to hear just what they were capable of on stage. One of my all time favourite groups, roll on August.

Got yourself a deal!
I bought this album back in 1979 mainly because I was intrigued by the cover design. Once I had played it, I was hooked. Each song blends into the next through a theatrical performance that I'm sure if witnessed would be both dark and humorous. I would so have loved to have been in the audience at this gig, they must have been spoilt visually and audibly, especially the references to "babies arms" and "apples!" - yeah I know. Anyway now many years later I have been able to download the entire album in a few seconds at much less than I originally paid for the vinyl version.I cannot recommend this album enough. Buy it and enjoy it you will then know you "have got yourself a deal!

Maybe the best Tubes album to have.
If you thinking about buying this album then dont hesitate. The Tubes at the top of their game live in london in the late 70s. Crisp sound, sublime playing and hilariously funny. Shades of Zappa throughout.
