Fantastic follow up to their debut
Firstly, I'd like to correct the frankly incorrect statements made by the reviewer above. The Modey Lemon are an American band, not British and his comparisions to the Dears and Hope of the States are wildly off-the-mark.The Modey Lemon's second album, Thunder and Lightning, picks up where their self-titled debut left off- a barrage of angry guitar noise, loose fast but heavy drums and swampy Moog attack, but this follow up sees the band progress and grow tighter and more confident. Their sound melds garage rock (think the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) to 70s proto-punk (the The Stooges) and early experimental electronica (think Sun Ra or Silver Apples) and yet this album is curiously distinct, much to the credit of the band. This album sounds good LOUD, the production is thick and at times dirty, but this is desirable when the band sound as dark and as powerful as they do. The lyrics are fantastic too, recalling mythology and anti-love, as is Phil Boyd's delivery, which is wild and unhinged. This is a great second album by a band who are getting better and better as they develop their style further. Highly recommended!
