are they ball end or tied?

The ones I had were tied for a classical mate! 

Does anyone know why this is a 7 string pack with 2 g strings? i seem to like the gold g better (tighter than the clear g).

it does have both the gold and traditional clear G strings. For those who have not used this set before, it is in my opinion a bit stiffer than most high tension strings I’ve played in the past, For that reason, I find the playability to be a bit or a departure from Savarez Augestine or other D Addarios. The result for me has been a conscious modulation vis-à-vis right hand technique as well as the way I produce vibrato with the left hand. I have found them to be a particularly quiet string, in terms of finger noises, but clear with suprisingly wide dynamic range. Not perhaps my favorite for classical or baroque music but Particularly suited for 20th century and jazz.

Why isn't the low E string not polished like the other basses?

Mine was polished, but what I have seen is that the color is reflected differently on each of the three wound strings, particularly on the thinner D string. I love the sound and playbility of these strings over the regular EJ45's.

Great, but why is the D so light? Have to spend another $6 on a harder single D string to make it work proportionately withe the normal tension.

It depends on your personal taste, and ear. I like the feel and tone of the D, when using the composite G.
