What size pump is recommended?

I use a 400 gph aquarium pump for my setup. It will water 6 plants in less than 20 seconds. It all depends on your setup.

Could they work using gravityfeed insead of a pump

Although I have not used them in a gravity feed setup, I bet you could do so, provided you had enough head on the source water. At least a meter/yard height should work.

Is there a 1/4-inch option?

No at least not this model as it is a solid mold.
