Simple toddler activity book!
I purchased several well reviewed toddler/preschool activity books. Most of them are overwhelming and require you to go out and purchase quite a bit of stuff just to do one activity of the hundreds in the book. You don’t know where to start and the book ends up in a pile. Plus, the directions are generally a bit short. They tell you how to do t he activity, but not really how to get the maximum learning out of it. Also, the book production values are fairly cheap. This book is different. The activities are simple. At the beginning of the book, there are directions on how to make several basics from stuff most people already have around the house and how to store it. Those basics are used many places in the book, but you could also get store bought play dough or modeling clay for some of them if you prefer. The activities in the book are very simple. Your toddler or preschooler can definitely do and enjoy them. And in typical Mr. Rogers style, the activities give suggestions on how to talk to your your child about the activity. It gives you questions on their level to ask them and get them thinking, making connections, and learning. Following these suggestions will help your child learn AND make you a better parent and teacher. And they are so simple! They feel natural, calm and relaxing, not forced at all. And the pages are beautiful! Your toddler can sit with you and enjoy all the beautiful illustrations of Daniel Tiger and his family enjoying these activities while you read the book and select one or more to do with your child. You can read some of the activity to your child and get them all excited to do the activity with you (I would skip the part at the end that tells you how to talk about it with your child during the activity). Many of the activities fit seamlessly into activities you were going to be doing anyway- like making dinner- but show you how to involve your child and how to make it educational in how you talk about it with your child.Lots of the other toddler activity books are by moms who enjoy Pinterest. I have nothing against them and what they do is pretty cool, but the books take a lot of planning and buying on your part, a lot of stuff that may not be used again, and the educational value is just so so. This book is based on the career of Fred Rogers and the company he developed to work on socio emotional learning and other early learning skills. He devoted decades to educating young children and a lot of research. He also just fundamentally understood young children, their capabilities, and how they think. This book is just wonderful and a breath of fresh air.
