Hard compared to the beech, I use a clean zelkova wood grain material.

Too bad it couldn't have come in a plastic box of ...
Kendama shinfuji shairaki (zelkova) (japan import). came in a plastic see through bag with japanese wording instructions in it. Too bad it couldn't have come in a plastic box of some kind. Kid's haven't open the plastic bag as they want to keep it original and maybe as a collective toy.

Good quality kendama for beginners and experts.
This is a great standard (JKA certified) competition kendama, great for beginners and experts alike. The cup & sword (handle) are made of zelkova, with a semi-gloss lacquer-like finish which (for me) allows for a better grip on the handle than beech. The ball is made of sakura (cherry) wood. Overall these are harder woods than an all-beech version, making this kendama slightly heavier than ones made entirely of beech. While that makes it less susceptible to dings and chips (beech dings easier), the extra heft & weight also means more stress on the string, which means you might be replacing the string more frequently than one with a lighter beech ball (this one comes with an extra string). I have both types and ultimately it comes down to personal user preferences. For me the extra weight and extra grip finish of zelkova / cherry facilitates "sticking" the tricks. Whichever you choose, JKA certified kendamas are quality products and with proper use (and occasional string replacements) should last you years.Should also mention: I ordered mine through Deputi-Japan, who were very fast and thoughtful with their packaging.

Five Stars
I would say this feels better than Kendama USA for its light weight.

this is great for projects
Not exactly the kendama it says it is, for those players and/or collectors, this kendama IS NOT A SHIRAKI, it's just the plain natural wood, shinfuji. Although, this is great for projects, such as custom paintings or stains. I expected what I seen in the picture, but got something else. Either way, it's still cheaper online than in stores

I like it a lot
Definitely not what is pictured. The ken is not a hardwood, but it still plays well. A little thicker of a ken than an Ozora. I like it a lot, but down stars for false advertising and fake picture.

good klack, awful tip
Bought this because I was looking into hardwood kendamas. I hadn't heard of the wood that this is made from so I tried it. The price is fair I guess. My main complaint is that the tip isn't well-made, its not pointy and made with precision. Also the whole thing isn't sanded so it has a rough feel out of the package. All of this can be fixed at home, but you would want a kendama to be really nice right out of the box.6/10 would not buy again

Coool!!
