Review: A very good router for specific jobs due to it's design - What is the key feature that makes this router especially useful for some tasks compared with others I own? It's the depth setting adjustment, shown at the left side of the first image. It covers a wide range with fairly granular control of the depth steps. Why is this useful to me? This current project is a good example- speaker cabinet front panels fabricated from hard rock maple ply. This is serious stuff for power tool woodworking, cabinet grade MDF is like butter or cardboard in comparison. So, it's pretty mandatory when doing a deep route to use a number of shallow steps and a slow feed. This fixture makes that very straight forward, and very repeatable when doing multiple routes of the same dimension (second image, routing cut outs in progress for the inner front panel of an LF module for a high end speaker system. It's easy to calibrate for a consistent starting point and getting very exact results for a number of operations. Now, no router I've found is the perfect router for every job. This Bosch tool is very well built, has excellent torque and speed control, and with the additional fixed base can handle a variety of jobs. Where some might find it lacking is having a comprehensive dust collection feature built in with a clear dust dust shield over the working area, like some DeWalt and Porter Cable 1/2" shank routers I own. But that same dust shield can limit the utility - specifically, the depot of plunge for the router, and the depth of cuts. Here, on this project, I'm working with 1-1/4" maple ply and 1-1/2" maple ply, and doing cuts between 1" and 1-1/4". This isn't possible with the routers featuring the dust collection and dust shields, because of the limit these place on plunge depth with multiple passes. This is why I tend to have multiple routers chosen and setup for specific jobs, and leave them that way once things are dialed in. I have three of the Bosch 1617EVS now for that reason... two with plunge base setup, one with fixed base. The other thing I have found very useful with this Bosch model is the accessory template guide adapter and templates. Here are pictures of the base with the template guide and a short adapter for 1/2" solid carbide spiral up cut bit installed, in the "baseline" position and extended. One of the 1617EVS is always setup with this adapter. What I find the fixed base configuration useful for is trim functions using follower bits of various types- from setting the rebate for a high frequency driver after boring the original hole with a Forstner bit, or trimming a side or inner route flush using a 1/2" shear trim bit. I have jobs for which this configuration works better than my 1/4" shank trim routers.
Review: Powerful and Long Lasting - I’ve been using the Bosch 1617EVSPK for a few months now, and it’s quickly become my go-to router for almost every woodworking project. The 2.25 HP motor delivers more than enough power for hardwoods, and the variable speed control lets me dial in the perfect setting for different materials and bit sizes. The soft start is a great touch—no sudden jerks when you power on. The combo kit is incredibly versatile. The fixed base is rock-solid and perfect for clean edge work, while the plunge base has smooth action and precise depth adjustments, making it ideal for inlays and mortising. The microfine depth adjustment on both bases ensures accuracy down to a hair. Build quality is excellent—everything feels sturdy, and the ergonomic handles make it comfortable to use for long periods. Switching between bases is quick and tool-free, and I love that it comes with both 1/4" and 1/2" collets, a rugged carrying case, and all the wrenches you need.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: if i were to mount this to a table, does this router provide a height adjustment from above the router table?**
A: Yes. The fixed base has a micrometer adjustment, which is a vernier type adjustment knob that can be adjusted in readable increments of 1/64". When mounted under a router table the adjustment knob can be accessed and turned with a adjustment key (an allen wrench screw, wrench with handle included) through a hole in the table. Your particular table most probably won't have the hole pre-drilled, so you will have to drill the hole yourself, which shouldn't be a big deal. Personally, I don't use the above table adjustment, because I want to be able to read the depth graduations on the dial as I make height adjustments. When I mount my router onto the table using it's base I always position the adjustment dial toward the front so that I can read the adjustments as I make them. I saw the other answer to your question where the author mentioned that a router used in a table should be at least 3HP. I disagree with this comment unless you are doing professional work and are using the router continuously. I've have gotten consistently good results while using this router at less than full speed as designated for rail and stile bit sets that I use. If you would be cutting into a hard wood like oak, you may not want to try to make a full depth cut on the first pass. I prefer to may multiple cuts through the depth of the cut with a final one removing no more than 10-15% of the total material being removed. This ensures that by taking a small cut as the last cut that you minimize bit chatter, hang-up and breakout, and that your results are smooth and consistent.

**Q: Is this product compatible with the bosch router table?**
A: While this router is compatible, I have not found it a pleasant experience. Mounting is a large pain and attempting to do depth control and other tasks proves difficult. If you have the time/resources, I would consider building your own.

**Q: I read in one of the reviews, (current review) this router comes with a kit including carrying case, circle jig and an edge guide. Is this correct?**
A: Even today Oct 21, 2015, no circle jig, no edge guide, no RA1126 adapter (needed for Bosch RA-Series template guides (bad stuff)) and no RA1100 adapter (needed with the RA1126 adapter) to allow Porter Cable or other threaded template guides for use with this router, nor the RA1151 Router Subbase Centering Pin and Cone. If I had known that I would need an adapter for an adapter, I would have passed this brand by. Mea Culpa.

**Q: Why buy this one over the Dewalt 2.25hp kit? The Dewalt is $40 more, and usually Bosch is more expensive than Dewalt.**
A: I did some research, and read some reviews on the Bosch routers, and they were the most highly recommended of the routers. They were also top pick in Popular Mechanics Mag which finally convinced me to go with this brand. My Dad worked as a carpenter by trade for many years, and he has used Bosch, Dewalt, and a lot of other brands of routers, and power tools and he always had good things to say about Bosch routers. He had an older model that he bought 25+ years ago the burnt up beyond hope of repair last year and so I bought this one to replace it and he loves it!!! As I do.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best router for anyone, great quality, good price.
*by P***S on November 5, 2003*

Bought this router after a week of research. Looked at porter cable, dewalt, and this bosch router. determined through reviews on this site as well as other reviews that the bosch was the router that I wanted after the first day, but decided to wait and read through some more reviews. Saw the Bosch 1617 router combo at Lowe's for 219, but it was not the 1617evspk, which comes with a free edge guide/ circle cutter and also lists as 2 hp, may be the same motor, but I want the newer, updated router . Looked on amazon and found this router, the Bosch 1617EVSPK which came with a edge guide/circle cutter and the router mat for $219.00. I agree with another buyer who said that this router does very professional work and can make anyone look like they know what they are doing. Even my wife who has never used a router was able to use this with ease. It is very easy to switch between bases, clean design. The included cast wrenches for changing bits are sign of a better quality router and the edge guide/circle cutter is a must and a cinch to use. I like that it comes with functional carrying case that holds everything but the edge guide, even has places for most commonly used bits of both shank sizes. A major plus is depth adjustment that stays the same even after switching back and forth between bases; you don't have to readjust and hope its the same depth. The router has a feel of solid design, cuts soft and hard woods like butter, no vibration and is quite. Slow start is a must to prevent damage when kicking on. I read complaints of the switch location, but has not really bothered me and I don't know of a better place to put the switch where it would not create other problems. There is not really a better place to put the switch that would not interfere and either get dirty or turn the unit off/on accidentally. Flat top makes for easy bit changes and ensures that router does not turn itself on for those of us who do not unplug the unit (bad habit). The real wood handles make for a solid feel, instead of hollow plastic. The plunge base has an easy to reach lock that allows user to keep both hands on the router and minimize mistakes. A couple of thoughts on why I bought this router. When buying a router, could have bought 2 routers, 1 plunge and 1 fixed base, would have costed me the same for equal power, but not equal quality, and may need to buy separate accessories for both routers, like dust kit, edge guides, etc. I also figured I would spend at least $120 for a decent low end router, but would have to replace it after 4 years and would not have all the functions that I wanted. Rationalized that since getting the Edge guide for free, normally $40, took the price down; since most routers do not come with an edge guide or a circle cutter, especially one tool that does both. Figured that all the wood work that I would do, and plan to do, would only like to make the purchase once and have a nice router to boot, so I might as well buy it right the first time. I am not a hardcore woodworker, but routing is something that cannot be done by hand and the few times that I may use it you need the right equipment; it's value is immeasureable. There is nothing worse than having bad tools or tools that are a hassle to use. This router is something that I may keep till I get really old and pass off to my kids, and will still be a great tool then. Simply could not waste my time and patience with a lesser quality router. Bosch really put a lot of time into designing this router and its carefull placement of things, even the switch. Free shipping through amazon and no tax saved even more than buying from store, another plus. Have recommended this router to several friends and they have nothing but good things to say about it. If you are into woodworking, would also recommend the Bosch 1594 3-1/4-inch planer, another well designed tool that performs better than expected, only way to describe is that it literally glides over the wood surface and no sanding is needed afterwards, who could ask for more? Update: I have ran into 2 instances of the switch not working, probably due to dust on the contacts inside the switch. Not enough to change my rating though, since all it took was a little compressed air around the switch to get it working again. The second time I had to use Electric cleaning spray, found at your Pepboys, near the brake cleaner sprays. Hopefully in future designs they seal the switch off entirely. This router is still one of my most favorite tools.
