24 Declassified: Death Angel

This is the first book I've read in the 24 Declassified Series and I have to say it wasn't that bad of a read. I just finished reading the book today and I thought it was alright. It did seem a bit long but I did like the dialogue between Jack and his other associates. There are some good twists and turns and anyone who is a fan of 24 should get into this.

I have read all of the 24 Declassified books and this is the weakest link. It feels like it could have been just any spy novel with the name of the character changed to Jack Bauer. It has none of the charm or suspense of the others--at least one of the "twists" can be seen coming a mile away.

This the first David Jacobs 23 novel I read, it lacks the close knit punches of the TV series, in one part he went on a long narrate of the background story, it is almost like watch a TV show with a sidebar explaining the show. Almost quit reading it at that point, since it is a Jack Bauer story you already know he would prevail eventually, what we want is tightly packed actions.

Great read.

It did no feel like a Jack Bauer novel from the dialogue or from the plot

Jack Bauer's enemy as he operates in the apparently still a bit Wild West is a group called "Annihilax", which struck me at first as a Superman-style villain, until I read further and it turns out to be a bit like the James Bond nemesis SPECTRE. A new SPECTRE which has taken a page from the Al Qaeda book in keeping with the realities of the 21st century. Whatever it is, they're trying to grab up a new laser-based weapons technology called "Medusa", which possibly spells The End Of The World As We Know It if it falls into the wrong hands. And since Annihilax is apolitical like SPECTRE, the motive is what money can be made. We see the Jack Bauer as we know him from the Fox series and earlier books in this series--a cross between James Bond and Dirty Harry, blowing away everybody in sight in a way that seems aimed at making the liberals gasp; "See that? Those right wingers are all alike, placing bargain-basement prices on human life!" Okay, it's a given that the left hates Jack Bauer and are glad that at least he's off TV where he "can't teach our young people that violence is the answer to everything". But we've seen what happens when a major nation takes a pacifist (or at teast isolationist) direction in foreign policy. The West has been telling the world; "we don't hate you and we don't want to fight you" to the rest of the world for years, and we've been getting the response; "Yeah, but WE hate YOU, and we DO want to fight you." The trouble is that not enough people are listening. Jack Bauer is a fictional character, and as such a bit of a caricature, but our only hope is that maybe we've got some people who care enough about our country to want to fight for it. We've got too many of today's versions of Hanoi Jane in the form of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Michael Moore. Who all have audiences who practice "militant apathy" in true "Me Meneration---middle aged version" fashion. Tina Turner once sang "We Don't Need Another Hero", but the truth of it is that we do. Maybe Jack Bauer as originally created is an epression of that feeling. To be a Sarah Palin doofus "flag waver" is seen as the epitome of uncool, but I tell you, having one's country come down around one's ears is even less cool. Let's leave Jack Bauer as he was first imagined, not the aging misanthrope seen in this book.

I do enjoy reading these books. They are a little more detailed and graphic than the series was allowed to be.

Lots of death, destruction and violent twists. Will read again. Classic 24. Damn I miss the TV show but this is a pretty good substitute.

It is ok

After maybe 80 pages, I stopped reading this bok. Too much information/background we didn't know. the story started to go all over the place. David Jacobs [after reading a previous book of his in the 24 series] continues his own writing style, ignoring the concept/format and writing of the previous authors in the series. FRom what it looks like, maybe that's why the book series died.Hopefully Tom Clancy doesn't use him again [assuming he had some say].

good read if your a 24 fan x book is easy to read and chapters are short enough to read chapter to chapter if your travelling and have to watch for the stops (if you see what i mean)

Eine Mordserie unter den Wissenschaftlern des Ironwood Laboratoriums in Los Alamos hat die Aufmerksamkeit der CTU erregt. Obwohl zwar das FBI die Ermittlungshoheit über den Fall für sich reklamiert ist es doch die CIA und damit ihr Ableger CTU die in Fällen wo Nuklearforschungseinrichtungen betroffen sind für die Ermittlungen zuständig ist. Etwas das den örtlichen FBI-Agenten so gar nicht behagt. Schon gar nicht weil Jack Bauer Tod und Zerstörung magisch anzuziehen scheint. Jack selbst hingegen weiß nicht wem er vor Ort vertrauen kann, denn fast auf sich alleine gestellt ist er der einzige der um die wahre Bedeutung der Morde weiß. Ein Top-Killer scheint am Werk zu sein - Annihilax, der Death Angel. Und Annihilax hat seit seines blutigen Zusammentreffens mit Jack in Brüssel noch eine Rechnung mit ihm offen...Natürlich steckt noch mehr dahinter, von größenwahnsinnigen Wissenschaftlern, Spionen, über Verbrechersyndikate bis zu auf eigene Faust ermittelnden Agenten und einem Killerkommando. Doch was David Jacobs wieder einmal abgeliefert hat ist eindeutig nicht mehr 24 und erinnert höchstens noch in Ansätzen an die Serie oder die Werke seiner Vorgänger Marc Cerasini und John Whitman, obwohl er diesmal auch Nina Myers und Tony Almeida Gastauftritte gönnt.Der Hauptkritikpunkt an Jacobs Werk ist immer der gleiche geblieben. Im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern weiß er nichts mit dem Echtzeitkonzept der Serie anzufangen. Auch gelingt es ihm nicht neben dem Haupthandlungsstrang um Jack eine Nebenhandlung aufzubauen. 24 ohne Splitscreen!Dazu kommt als deutlich nachrangiges Problem dass Jacobs auch die für die Serie typischen Plot-Twists mid-season nicht umzusetzen versteht. Im Gegenteil, eine solche Änderung dass plötzlich für den Rest der Staffel nicht mehr die offensichtlichen ersten Gegenspieler am Zug sind wagt Jacobs gar nicht. 24 mit den fortlaufend gleichen Gegenspielern!Im Gegenteil, Jacobs baut seinen Plot auf wie einen 08/15-Thriller, mit großer Auflösung auf den letzten 100 Seiten. Dazu verwendet er auch den einen oder anderen Flashback, ja sogar klare mit Dialogen versehene Erinnerungen. Ein enormer Stilbruch gegenüber der Serie. 24 mit 08/15-Thriller-Plot und den einen oder anderen Flashback!Bleibt als massiver Kritikpunkt Jack Bauer selbst, der in Jacobs Darstellungen für gewöhnlich immer alleine und ohne Backup durch die CTU unterwegs ist. Damit spart sich Jacobs mal den CTU-Cast einzuführen, entfremdet den Leser aber auch von der Serie. Doch Jacobs Bauer ist kaum noch als jener Charakter zu erkennen, den Kiefer Sutherland darstellt. Jacobs Bauer lässt sich von kleinen FBI-Bullys herumschubsen, muss sich zunehmend vor den lokalen Hilfssheriffs rechtfertigen und wird mit leitenden Agenten konfrontiert, die das meiste lieber auf den nächsten Tag verschieben möchten. Das ist doch nicht mehr Jack Bauer!Schreibt Jacobs weiterhin alleine an den Declassified-Romanen wird die Reihe bald oder schon mit diesem Band vorüber sein. Was auch besser so ist, denn was Jacobs abliefert erinnert kaum noch an die Serie, geschweige denn die Declassified-Romane Whitmans und Cerasinis, man denke nur an die gravierenden Unterschiede zur gelungen Stilübertragung der Serie auf Bücher wie Operation Hellgate oder Veto Power. Jacobs lässt das alles vermissen, angefangen von mit der CTU, den Nebenhandlungen und einer Achterbahnfahrt statt einer aufs Ende zusteuernden Spannungskurve.Fazit:Jacobs Fall ist wohl aussichtslos. Death Angel - ein 08/15-Agenten-Thriller ohne 24-Feeling!
