Hem Gems Temporary Tailors. Love your favorite pair of jeans but not how the hems drag across the floor when you wear flats? Two friends devised a clever solution that’s as stylish as it is practical. Called Hem Gems, the invention lets you shorten your jeans instantly. Laura Gelberg and Julia Houck-Whitaker were inspired by Oprah’s 2007 search for the “next big idea.” They didn’t win the competition, but it challenged them to find a solution to a problem they both experienced: inflexible jean lengths. Their ingenious denim pins hold upturned pant legs in place (you can tuck the cuff up and inside, so the original hem still shows). They’re available in two styles -- a pyramid-shaped stud and a classic rivet -- that mimic the hardware on traditional jeans. You can choose silver or brass, and each set includes eight denim pins. With these easy tacks, your jeans won’t drag on the ground and prematurely fray. When you want to pair your jeans with a higher heel, you can undo the pins in a snap and revert to the original length. They’re also great for traveling light: You can wear flats while you’re traveling then undo the pins for an evening in heels. Presto, instant tailoring.
