I handcraft this unique necklace using a real Morpho Selenaris butterfly wing, expertly embedded under magnified glass in a teardrop shape! (Read below for more on how I ethically obtain the wings!). The magnified glass teardrop measures 18x25mm (0.7" x 1") and is set in a silver plated bezel setting and then hung from an 18" silver plated beaded satellite chain. Each piece comes in its own custom gift pouch with literature on the species of butterfly and a free die-cut sticker or magnet! The Morpho Sulkowski Selenaris Butterfly, also known as the “holograph morpho” is a rather rare species, found only in Peru. It is the female counterpart to the male "Pearl Morpho". The wings are a combination of white and brown stripes (reminiscent of zebra stripes), with an iridescent purple-ish sheen on top that shimmers in shades of lavender blue when the sunlight hits them! The color in the butterfly's wings is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. *NOTE* No Butterflies are harmed in the making of my jewelry! All butterflies are raised on butterfly farms and sanctuaries and allowed to live their full lifespan, which averages about 1 month, and then collected and sold so that their beauty can live on! Butterfly Farming actually helps to preserve rain forests and also assures the survival of natural butterfly habitats. Native people are encouraged to grow plants and raise insects opposed to clearing land for cash crops. I am a member of and donate to the Rainforest Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the Rainforest and the many species that live within it, including the Blue Morpho! This listing is for ONE (1) necklace.
