Great capacity but a bit noisy
Attaching to the DirecTV Genie was easy. Worked as advertising, giving a 6X improvement in recording space for programs.Besides the annoyingly bright blue LED's (fixed with black tape), I was disappointed by the level of fan noise. I wouldn't call it loud, but the DVRdaddy fan is much noisier than the Genie alone. My wife immediately noticed the difference. Probably something you can just get used to and live with. Remember the DVRdaddy will be on 24/7 for most people.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ESATA PORT!
I was never able to install this because the newest Directv HR54(mine was manufactured 11/2018) does not have an ESATA port. The vendor said I could not use the USB port so I will have to send it back. Just be sure you have an ESATA port before you order it. (I ordered mine before they installed the HR54 because the description said it was compatible so I didn’t know).

Product look good and was easy to install
Product look good and was easy to install. My DTV HR54 formatted the 6TB HD with no problems.I only gave it 4 stars cause of the following:Only complaint I do have is WHY did you put blinking blue lights on this HD enclosure? This annoyed the hell out of me and there are two of them. Had to cover them with black electrical tape to hide them from view. WHY on earth would I want 2 blinking blue lights staring me in the face as I watch TV? You do not need these activity lights if that's what they are, I will know unit is working if I can see my recorded programs.Just a on light would of been plenty that does not blink.________________________________________________________________PS: Changed my review to 5 stars for the following reason.I contacted DVR Daddy support about the blinking lights and they sent me a PDF file on how easy it is to unplug the lights. Just take out the 4 screws, lift the lid and there is the plug for the lights. Just unplug it and no more lights annoying you.If you buy one and the lights bother you too send support a message and I am sure they will send you the .pdf also, has pictures to so you know what your doing, just one page. I would link it but since it's a .pdf and not a internet source no idea how :)

Drive Failed in Less than 6 Months.
There is noting special about this drive even though it is advertised as DirecTV certified or some such baloney. It is nothing more than a 6 TB Western Digital hard drive in a case with fancy writing and graphics on it.About 4 months after installing the drive, my DirecTV DVR started freezing and would not respond to remote control inputs. I would press a button like freeze or menu and nothing happened for about 30 seconds and then I would get a response. As time went on, the frequency and duration of the freezing increased. Finally, today, less than six months since I started using DVRDaddy drive, the DirecTV DVR reset itself automatically, and took almost half an hour to go through the reset process. When it finally finished, all I had was a black screen. I tried a deliberate manual reset, and the same thing happened again. I disconnected the DVRDaddy drive hit reset and everything worked perfectly.Just to be sure, I reconnected the DVRDaddy Drive and hit reset, and once again after almost half an hour I got a black screen. The drive is less than six months old and has failed. In my book that rates it one star.I contacted this company, which now seems to be out of business, and got one generic response email and that was the last I heard from them. So it looks like I have a $280 paperweight. Apparently they dumped the last of their junk on unsuspecting customers and disappeared. So called warranties are not very good when the company is fly by night and disappears in a few months. At least they won't be around to fleece more people. However, if this product ever reappears, DO NOT BUY IT!

DVRdaddy is a great improvement to DIRECT TV recording capacity. No hassle installation, and flawless operation at low cost
This 6TB DVRdaddy is a perfect recording expander for the DIRECT TV Genie. I had just decided to change our satellite tv provider and needed much more program recording capacity than DIRECT TV could provide with their own system. I reviewed a number of websites and learned about the DVRdaddy and checked it out on Amazon. The 25 rewiews and solid 5 star ratings were very encouraging to me, so I placed my order and received it two days later. Neither the technical support staff at DIRECT TV nor the installation technician who installed the system for 8 TVs in my house had heard about DVRdaddy, but when I shared the Amazon reviews, and some of the technical specifications with them, they were both interested. After the DIRECT TV Genie and 7 Genie mini units were set up and tested, I powered the Genie down and connected the power source and esata cable exactly as directed in the DVRdaddy instructions and powered the Genie back up and everything worked perfectly. No problems at all in the following 6 days, and I have been able to schedule, record and play over 20 hours of tv programming so far. Six times the recording capacity of the DIRECT TV system for the very reasonable cost of about $55 per TB is great. I highly recommend this unit.

Cannot access saved programs without the same, identical DVR that recorded the program.
Device was easy to install and has been working perfectly since it was installed about five months ago. I do not like the blue light in the front flashing constantly. I have placed the device in a location where it cannot be seen. This device will significantly increase what you can save. An issue people should be aware is that each DVR encodes the programs it saves with a unique code. Changing the DVR renders the saved programs unreadable. They cannot be played.

Directv receivers can’t handle 6 terabyte drives.
Buy the 2 terabyte external hard drive. The 6 terabyte unit cannot be fully used due to the limitations of the directv receivers. The contain 10 year old technology. Once you get over 50 percent storage on the external drive your receiver will freeze and ocassionally go into reset mode. With a nearly full drive the reset will take hours. Also, if you need to replace a directv receiver none of what you have recorded with the prior receiver can be played. At that point you might as well delete everything on the external hard drive and start over. Much better to buy multiple 2 terabyte hard drives and switch them out and not overtax the directv receiver.
