Tabei 52 Degree Backpacking Sleeping Bag

UPDATE 12/7/2017:So we were camping in the Ozarks the week of Thanksgiving this year. Temps at night got into 20s. Morning temps when we woke up were 25-28 degrees every morning. I brought my Kelty Bestie (blanket) with me on this trip. My sleep system was my Klymit V Luxe (non-insulated), my Rovor Tabei, and my Bestie blanket ... and I slept like a champ. I was warm and comfortable all night long. The only time I got cold was when I had to go outside to relieve myself in the middle of the night.Another great outing with my Tabei. To be fair, I brought a 0-degree bag just in case, but didn't need it and left it in the car.UPDATE 8/15/2017:My oldest son (Life Scout) took his Rovor Tabei to Philmont this summer for a 12 night trek. Temps for them were in the low to mid 40s at night. He said the bag worked great. He used the Tabei and a Klymit V sleeping pad, and had a total sleep system that weighed 3.5 pounds! He said he slept in a t-shirt, shorts and socks every night and had no issues keeping warm enough.Another success story with this bag!I have to say, I'm very impressed. And I did sign up for their mailing list, and they sent me the bright orange survival bandanna (actually, very nice). If I had one complaint about the mailing list, it's that I haven't received anything else from them. I'd actually like an email once a quarter or so about new products and such. They have been radio silent. It's nice not to get the junk mail, but I don't get ANYTHING from them at all. I'm curious if they plan on a more active outreach campaign at some point, because I think there's a value to provide there.I picked up a Kelty Bestie blanket for $15 this week, and now I have my Winter camping sleep system too! The Tabei with this blanket should keep me plenty warm down below freezing, and only adds another 24 ounces to my pack. Win!UPDATE 7/17/2017:Just got back from summer camp in Colorado with my sons' Boy Scout troop. We camp out of state every couple years, and this year we went to Camp Alexander in Pike's Peak National Forest in Colorado. It rained EVERY DAY (bummer) but only in the afternoons. The mornings were sunny and beautiful. Our average temp during the day was low 70s and average temp at night was 40 - 45 degrees. I was completely comfortable in this bag. As a tall guy (6' 2"), the 90 inch bag length is great. I slept in light wool hiking socks, shorts and a t-shirt every night. Even on nights where the temp dipped into the low 40s, I was toasty. I actually had to open up the bag a few times because I was getting too warm. The bag packs down small and lofts up nice (if you store it right). After a long week (7 nights) of camping and backpacking, my initial quality concerns seem unnecessary. The bag held up great and should last several years. However, for under $40, it's not expensive to replace. So far, there are no wear issues to list, I just see that it may be an issue over time. Hopefully not, but it's still kind of hard to believe that you could get this good a bag for this price. The zippers work great (drawstring on the outer zipper turned out to be a small but very helpful feature). The draw strings all worked great. The baffles worked great.I'm a little confused by the product strategy at Rovor, as they have two more bags in the same price range that also overlap the temp ratings. If they made a 0-degree bag, I'd probably pick one up just for those winter camp trips we do once or twice year where temps get to freezing or below. At < $40, it would be worth it to have the option for those trips.I highly recommend this bag. I'm very impressed by it's performance over the long week of camping. It's inexpensive, lightweight, plenty warm, and long enough for us taller campers.ORIGINAL REVIEW:Took this out for the first time this last weekend. Temps at night dropped to 50 - 54 degrees depending on the night. I was very comfortable in this bag.For me, in Texas, this is the perfect bag for three seasons of camping. If it's going to be freezing outside, I'll take my 0-degree bag. However, it's usually way too warm for a 0-degree bag.The Tabei was plenty long (I'm 6' 2") and had enough space in it (230 lbs). My guess would be that if you have a waist size bigger than about 38 or 40, this might be too snug for you. I have a 42" chest, and was perfectly comfortable in this bag. If you are much larger than that, again, this might be too snug for you.Construction seems good enough. After all, the bag was under $40, so I wasn't expecting an REI Magma 10 bag ($370) when I opened the box. We'll see how long this bag lasts. My general rule is to take care of your equipment. I'm not stress testing this bag, I'm camping with it. So far, it seems made plenty well, especially for the price. If I have quality issues, I'll come back and update my review. Right now, it seems like I should expect this bag to last at least one to two years using it on my schedule (camping/backpacking at least once a month).I will offer that I was hard pressed to find another bag at this weight (2 lbs 3 oz) for this temp rating for anywhere near this price. Unless this thing just falls apart on me, which I have to say I don't expect to happen after having the chance to really look it over and use it, it's easily worth the $36 I paid for it.

It's hard to argue against the Rovor Tabei for a warm weather sleeping bag at the price point it comes in at. I've used it numerous times since I purchased it in a variety of different environments. Needless to say, I came away very impressed each time I took it out in the wilderness.First and foremost, it has kept me warm in temperatures reaching the low 30s and I was more than cozy during summer camping when it was in the high 50s at night. The length is spacious and I have plenty enough room width wise when it is completely zipped up. (For reference, I am 5'10 and roughly 175 pounds.) I've used it inside my hammock and on the ground with my  KLYMIT Inertia O Zone Sleeping Pad, Camo by Klymit  and both were comfortable experiences. It's great for the outdoors and would be a welcome addition to a survival kit in a car.It's extremely lightweight and when compressed, doesn't take up much space in my pack. In fact, I'm able to get my  Yukon Outfitters XL Mosquito Hammock (Earth) , sleeping bag, air mattress, emergency tarp and other shelter accessories inside my lower compartment of my  ALPS OutdoorZ Commander + Pack Bag . All that gear checks in at less than five pounds and fits inside a medium sized, water proof compression sack. It's a perfect combination for anywhere you can roam.That being said, I wouldn't advise the average camper to take this out as their only piece of sleep gear in very cold temperatures. I sleep 'warm' compared to most people and am used to cold environments, so my concerns would be less than most people. However, if you had proper personal gear (down vest, wool socks, hand warmers, etc.) -- you could definitely make a go of it and get a good night's sleep. Additionally, this bag could easily paired with a liner to increase it's warmth and use it adequately in such conditions.If you are on a budget and can't afford one of the more expensive sleeping bags or quilt sleeping systems, don't shy away from this product. It's worth the investment and will do you good while exploring the outdoors.I think the quality of the fabric and insulation is good, but do share similar concerns that after a while the quality might lessen.

Very lightweight, comfortable, and compact, great for backpacking. Definitely not very warm, will use as a summer only sleeping bag.

I’ve found this bag to be warm and comfortable.I’ve used this bag on 3 nights of hiking. The coldest night was in the low 30s, with 20+ mph winds, and I wasn’t in a tent. I was wearing thermal pants and a t-shirt, and was laying on a Thermo-Rest trail scout pad. Other than having a gust of wind blow down my bag occasionally I stayed relatively warm the whole night, not comfortably warm, but warm enough to sleep. When we got up in the morning there were ice crystals on the ground. I’m not sure exactly how cool it got, but it had to be near 30 or lower.I have 2 complaints about this bag that keep it from being a 5 star bag.- The bag is too long...by a lot. I'm only 5'8", and I realize there are many people taller than me that hike, but I don't see a lot of 7' guys hiking, and this bag would easily fit someone 7'. This makes the bag heavier then it needs to be by at least a few ounces, and it makes it tough to fit into the stuff sack. If this bag were about 8" shorter it would be better for the vast majority of people. Lighter, smaller, easier to pack, and probably a bit warmer.- This bag is tougher to zip than other bags I have used. Not a huge deal, but it will take you a few seconds longer than normal to get the bag zipped up cleanly.Overall this is a good bag and a good value, with a couple of things keeping it from being great.
