The Most promising Recording & lineup for this Band?...
Yes! This first Triumvirat's album maybe is their most promising and oustanding recording... By the intrincated compositional use of prog textures (diverse rhythms, overtures, thematical riffs, fugues and some others) over simple rock bases; make this, a well crafted suite of 16:34 minutes, where anyone can hear the kind of "Uriah Heep/ Emerson Lake & Palmer" influence esque(I don't believe the sweet story of "the Nice" influence at all). The sonic aprouche of this recording is more aproximated to the end of sixties than early seventies; something primitive & raw but really keeps the interest: This makes worthwhile the money paid for it. The musicians are impresively high talented, with great idea of how to play their instruments, than the following lineups. The vocal parts are technically poor but recordings like SPARTACUS showed the improvements in this part of the band' sound in 1975, when their sound seemed to be lighter and formulated in a more commercial context (But I gave it five stars too for other reasons), the bonus tracks of MEDITERRANEAN TALES shows this tendency...It's a shame that this lineup didn't last enough time to grow up and develop new ways. The follow up ILLUSIONS IN A DOUBLE DIMPLE proved to be a test (a musical fiasco?), a structural clone (How they dared?) of YES's masterpiece CLOSE TO THE EDGE, Fate only knows what could it be to this days if this lineup had continued recording...Good luck!

Ugly and beautiful at the same time.
I was very happy to find that these CD's had been released! If you like old Rush, Yes, and Emerson Lake and Palmer, three membered Triumvirat was more of the goodness I craved. From the overly gleefull happy intro riff to the barked out lyrics on this CD, its all over the place, but comes back home as well.It is a first album, so it stands out even more than the rest. If there was a band I wish I could have been born twenty years earlier to see, Triunvirat would be it...and Yes...and Rush...and The Who.Thanks, Hans, Hans, and Jurgen!

Collecting Down
I love the LP "Spartacus", yes I wrote "LP", I played it for years even if it sounded like a German ELP rip off. Somehow Triumvirat did a better job at story telling then anything ELP ever did, & the music fitted perfectly with the story. Some reviews on the other CD's write correctly that Triumvirat had a loser Jazz feel to them then the Classical tight bound of ELP. I heard "Double Illusions" from a friends LP in the mid 1970's & finally bought the CD years ago. It was not up to pare for what I remembered, but still a good early progressive music piece. I wanted to hear "Mediterranean Tales" & somehow I was under the impression that it would be more acoustic in nature. Far from the truth, it's another step down from "Double Illusions" & the music lacks transition & clarity. It does sound like a sophomore effort with gaps in the music. "Where is this music going?" will come to your mind. You can hear clues of the upcoming ELP sound but there was nothing to state what Triumvirat was all about. Buy this CD if you are collecting Triumvirat, but not for itself.

The album is reminiscent of ELP with excellent keyboard play but the vocals are a bit weaker than Greg Lake, as a whole it's a good prog rock album.

not bad at all
I don't really believe Triumvirat's Mediterranean Tales is NEARLY as mediocre as many reviewers seem to believe it is. Furthermore, the comparisons to Emerson, Lake & Palmer aren't really noticeable here like they are on Spartacus for example. That doesn't necessarily mean Mediterranen Tales is better than the bands next couple albums- it's not. The instrumental portions aren't *quite* as good here. The organ work being displayed throughout the 16-minute "Across the Waters" suite is superb. Lots of concern for melody and feeling, which is definitely the most respectable way to write progressive rock music. This suite actually flows extremely well. There's hardly any boring moments whatsoever, thanks mainly to some stellar instrumental chops that never really let up at all. Alright, perhaps the brief vocal melodies are unspectacular (at least the very first one is) but when the main focus is on the beautiful, melodic, lengthy organ jam all is *easily* forgiven. The final 5 minutes is a mighty fine display of organ and piano playing being played simultaneously."E Minor 5 9 Minor 5" is a dramatic classical-inspired tune that's built around weird synths and piano playing. It's unique that's for sure. It might get on your nerves, at least, the opening part might. I recommend sticking with it though because shortly after the song will transform into something very very unique and mysterious with some splendid organ work. It's quite frightening. "Broken Mirror" is focused around an organ jam but without much concern for melody. I must say, the jazzy vocal melody sounds out of place and well, to be perfectly honest, awful. I like how the vocal melody gradually moves away from the clunky one into a significantly more pleasant Beatles-inspired one. That's a rather unusual and awesome change of pace.Overall, I like Triumvirat's debut a lot more than most people do apparently. It's not that bad. Yes, Triumvirat would soon go on to create better albums, but Mediterranean Tales is a fine album in its own right.
