USB 2.0 External Enclosure for 2.5-inch IDE/PATA Notebook/Laptop Hard Drive HDD

Just received this item and tested it with two hard disks. It worked well and I have had no issues with it whatsoever. The case itself seems to be sufficiently sturdy. Some points which might be useful:- It comes with a small screwdriver to use screwing the case close; although the screws are very small and fit very tightly, it was adequate for the job. Note however that the HD itself does NOT screw into place, but is just held by friction.- I've been used to SATA drives and forgot how flimsy the little pins on PATA drives are; its VERY easy to bend them when installing this product, so be careful. (This is not a flaw in the product per se, just a fact of these small 2.5" drives)- The USB cable requires two USB jacks to provide enough power; this is normal for these external enclosures as far as I know. The only odd thing in this case is that the enclosure itself takes the LARGE size USB plug; the size which normally ends up in the PC. My other enclosure took a normal small size plug and I have been able to use it without the Y connector; this would not be possible with this enclosure.Anyway, for $6.73 including shipping, it seems like a great value to me.All the best!-----------Update July 25 2011It seems a different seller is now fulfilling this item (used to be from HDE); I had ordered a second one but a totally different (and not as nice) item showed up instead. Buyer beware!

This device has a poor quality case, with screws that almost work. I wouldn't recommend this for someone wanting to turn a laptop hard drive into portable storage, as the durability would be highly suspect. If true portability and reliability is needed, buy a reputable brand enclosure.It did work satisfactorily in letting me back up data from an old laptop drive. It's not a graceful solution, but it is very cheap.

For the ~$4 I paid, I wasn't really expecting much, but this enclosure is very easy to use and does its job well. The only issue is that the enclosed screws are tiny (smaller than the tip of a ballpoint pen), and the enclosed screwdriver is too big to use with them. One of the screw holes (in the plastic) is too big for the screws, and the other one I didn't screw all the way in for fear of stripping it, but honestly the case holds together decently without them. All in all, it does what it should, and it's definitely worth the price even with the shortcomings.

I purchased a HDD enclosure which up to today I am still waiting for it. I tried contacting the vendor but the only thing they suggested was to contact the closest post office of my neighborhood. I am really dissapointed with this purchase. The only good thing is that this device only cost about $7, but it is really bad when this kind of stuff happen. My recommendataion to anybody is to better go to the store in person, maybe fry's, bestbuy etc, and get your gadget from there. Do not waste the time nor the money purchasing any of these things on Amazon. Lately , this kind of situations are happening more often through this service.

Easily pop off a couple screws that hold this together, plug in the laptop hard drive and screw back together.Love these, they work great for switching laptop hard drives to portable drives when you want to upgrade a laptop hard drive.UPDATE 5/26/16: Very durable, I am still using the one I bought like nearly 10 years ago now.

Bought a number of these enclosures to utilize the spare laptop hard drives I've been collecting from salvaging old laptops from clients.The hard drives are easy to mount and the kit provides all the parts AND tools necessary to fully get the enclosure up and running.The controller is good and is immediately found when mounting the enclosure on a USB port on your computer.One way I've used these enclosures is to just use the controller part to act as the interface for an unmounted drive and cable it to my computer. Didn't even mount the drive in the enclosure. This allowed me to easily switch drives when looking for what's on the various drives that may not be labeled.Easy to use, inexpensive to purchase, a full kit provided. What more can one ask for?Great buy.

the case it's ok, it isn't damaged and the shipment is acceptable ( i live in Italy, so i have waited for about 3 weeks). now i must looking for a compatible portable Hardisk!

I bought this hard drive enclosure for a friend so I haven't used it a lot. The only thing that I had a problem with was the fact that the internal hard drive I was using it for wasn't quite a long as the enclosure itself. This meant that when I got the hard drive in the enclosure and plugged it in via the USB cable, the hard drive would be pushed into the enclosure to the point that the USB cable wasn't making a connection. I just removed the bottom of the enclosure and put a couple of pieces of velcro in and it fit properly. The only other thing about the enclosure is the fact that the light that should show green if everything is okay and red if it isn't seems to show red almost all the time. Even when I was able to access the hard drive without a problem, the light was still showing red.But, I'm not complaining since other enclosures were two or three times as much (if not more). I just wanted to let others know the small problems I ran into so that they would be aware if they bought the enclosure.Overall, I'm more than happy with the product.
