The history is alive in this book. You see a variety of perspectives from each character. The hope they have keeps them going & readers interested.

Orphan Theif
This was a good story of 14 year old Ruby, orphaned during WWII. Being now orphaned, she must make her way through the rubble as she struggles to survive .

The Orphan Thief
A very semi written tale about the second world war and how the English countryside lived through Hitler's bombing raids. We are introduced to survivors and how they help each other. Great book.

An enjoyable read
Another war story with a different twist or two. Ruby is a strong teenager who has lost her family. She focuses on survival of herself and others rather than on her own grief. She reaches out to help others and in doing so forms a new family of sorts.

Really good read
I enjoyed this story very much. Complete on one book. No cliffs, no waiting for next installment of however many weeks, years. Not a page Turner, just a good tale seen through the eyes of young girl during the blitz. The world building was good enough that I could get back to the story days later and not feel I had to reread a couple of chapters just to get back into the tale.No bad language, sexual stuff, excess violence.A b c d e f g h I j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

A rare 5 star rating
Glynis Peters is now my favorite author. Other is Prince if Tides and South of Broad author who could describe a sce;e in one sentence. Now deceased. In Ms Peters two WW ll books i have lived in war torn Europe. I was but achild but terrified when my grandfather would listen to the war news. How horrible to experience it first hand must have been! It has been brought to life in in the two orphan books I have enjoyed. . We need such books to keep alive the terrible price of war! Thank you for your meticulous research Ms Peters. I look forward to your next publication!

One of the best I've read.
This book really hit home. My English Mom was from Warwickshire and during my lifetime I have heard many stories of WWII and the bombings. My mom met my Dad in Coventry after he was wounded in South Africa . They married and to America in 1945/1946. This book is like hearing my Mom talk . For me this was not fiction at all. The author was right on. Sad but so true. A must read.

Desperate Times
Amazing at the resiliency of people going thru such horrible things and yet with the love and support of just a couple people working together it is encouraging to see what they are able to do.

Started off well but deteriorated
This story started well with the bombing of Coventry, but then deteriorated into an unrealistic scenario of a 16-year-old girl starting her own business, and falling for a Canadian military photographer after a few meetings (why does this author always have to have a Canadian love interest, plus a poorly developed and superficial relationship?). Her shop is destroyed in a bombing raid, she starts up again (in less than a year) and so it goes on - and on - and on, and becomes boring. The 'spiv' was such a caricature that he was laughable with his slicked-back hair and pencil moustache (just like the 'Dad's Army' character!) and the orphan's backstory was only revealed in a brief narrative account near the end of the story, almost as if the author thought, 'Oh, I'd better explain about Tommy's past.' This could have been a good story in the hands of an author who could create better than one-dimensional characters and unrealistic situations. Unfortunately, this author failed to do so.

Another winner
As we join Ruby Shadwell story once again, it's Coventry 1940 and sirens are going off, enemy bombs were destroying the city, Ruby is rushing back to the shop Shadwell Groceries in eagle street after running an errand for her mother. Getting close to Christmas she finds the shop and her home flattened and her family all dead. In deep shock she flees to her grans in Kirby Road that has also been hit and fears at such a young age she will be put into an orphanage. This book is about a girl all alone fighting for survival, it pulled at my heartstrings, for such a young girl to have to cope with during wartime, Ruby is such a strong wild spirit girl, this means she has to grow up fast. The orphan thief has many characters along the story, but Tommy I took to my heart as my favourite, a character that hold many secrets in his tragic young life. I loved this book written from the heart by the author, superb from the beginning to a beautiful ending.

The Orphan Thief
The story begins with a sixteen year old girl returning home from a errand during the war to find her entire family had been killed when a bomb hit their house in Coventry, she struggled for a few days sleeping in a den she and her brother had built ,she sought out different friends to help , to no avail til she remembered her fathers friend the accountant,The story then develops, meeting Fred and Mrs Beattie,The storyline a bit far fetched for me but an easy read

The losses of war and the strength of togetherness.
I gave 5 stars as the book captured my interest right the way through. It made me smile and made me cry.I loved how the city of Coventry was the focal point of the story and though this is a novel i felt like I knew more of the people, their lifestyles and how war effected that community by the end of the book. The book in the main was centered around 7 characters; Ruby, Fred, Beatty, Tommy, Helen, John and Earl. All but one of the characters support each other and become a family in several ways. The other character is the bad guy, who brings trouble for the others. The story does a circuit of love and loss on many levels.I related mostly to the main character Ruby and though i havent personally been through war could really empathise with her character.I feel anyone could read this book and would gain a wealth of insight by doing so.I am sad to say goodbye to these people and feel there could be a novel that went on from here. The book has 5 main characters and 2 prominent secondary character. Ruby, Fred,

Great story line
Losing her entire family in the Coventry Blitz, Ruby has to make her own way in life, not easy as a young girl who has always had the love and support of her family. She meets various people along the way who she helps and who help her along with a young boy. The community pulls together in these times of war and adversity.A well written book with realistic characterisations, a few surprises along the way bring the book into the top realms of fiction. Well written.
