Determine your own exact location based on landmarks and maps: Select two visible landmarks in different directions and measure the azimuth. The intersection of these two azimuth extensions on the map is where you are. 4. You can view the azimuth scale clearly and accurately through the small magnifier on the side of compass. Tips 1. Use in a horizontal state to ensure accuracy. 2. Put it in a ventilated, dry place to avoid mold. 3. Use a flannel to wipe the compass to keep it clean. 4. Keep at a distance from the barbed wire and magnetic objects to avoid pointing errors.

Advertised as new. NOT!!!
Shame on me for not reading every single word about this compass. I missed the part that we cannot return it. Came out of the box scratched up. No way we can give this as a gift. It’s only $20, but it’s the principle. But again- my bad for not reading the fine print. Live and learn. The reviews were mostly very good, maybe we were just unlucky. Rare to find a company that does not stand behind a product they sell. Now back to Amazon to find a decent working compass for our nephews Christmas gift.

Big Fan Of Eaggle Compasses
I now own a couple of Eaggle compasses, mostly because I like the craftsmanship and the price. This model is no exception! The compass works as described and is very well made The movement is very fluid and extremely accurate. Constructed out of metal and some plastic (to cut weight) it's definitely durable in the places where it matters. I would recommend this compass to anyone looking for a low-cost quality item for the outdoors.

UPDATED REVIEW: Nicely built...but doesn't consistently point north!
UPDATE: Contacted Eaggle directly about the problem I was having, and their customer service is top notch! Not only did they not make me return the faulty compass, but they refunded my purchase price AND sent me a very nice gift of hand towels to apologize for my trouble. Jas was very communicative, and while I'm disappointed that the product didn't work, I do applaud Jas for the great communication and for going above and beyond. Thanks! Highly recommend this company -- they stand behind their product!-----------------------------Weighty feel and seemingly nicely built product, but doesn't point north. Sitting completely still, I turned the compass itself around and the needle pointed "north" when I knew it was pointing east, and then west. I was going to give this to my boyfriend (big hiker) for Christmas, but what's the point of having this if it doesn't function?!

Very durable, a little heavy but its built to last
First impression, the box that it came with looked very plain and I wasn't sure what order it was until I remembered. It was just a black box, but inside was packaged properly. It was incased in plastic and the manual was neatly folded up inside. I actually ordered Eaggle's other compass in the past as a gift for my friend, and this compass looks and feels more durable. I feel like if I drop it, it would still work perfectly fine. It's also shaped like an avocado haha. The only thing that I don't like is the top screw which I'm not sure why its there. Im guessing it holds it together, but when I attach it to my lanyard, it gets loose over time , so I have to keep screwing it back together.

Nice classic pocket compass
Bought one for myself and liked it so much that I gave it away as a gift and bought a second one for myself. Nice water mounted compass in a pocket watch case. Very classy and fits in a pocket very well. Has a some what crude copy of the New York state quarter art work on the cover for some reason and a world map on the back. Both compasses were free of defects and worked well. With this type of compass, you have to hold it very level to get a good reading of magnetic north. Both seemed to point fairly close to north, within 5 degrees which is not bad for this kind of compass. Since there is no way to take a sighting greater accuracy would not make much different difference.

It will guide you right
I haven't had an occasion to use it yet but it appears to be accurate. I keep it in my vehicle because I was lost in the woods one day and it was cloudy so I had no reference to direction nor any cell phone service. I never want to be in that position again. God was good to me however. A couple in a pickup came along to guide me to my destination. Needless to say, the compass will be with me whenever I travel. It is beautifun, too. It reminds me of a "grandpa's pocket watch.

misleading...
there seems to be a discrepancy in the images for this and other items on Amazon. the other reviews show a very different compass in their pictures. that aside i am mostly happy with this compass. the only thing i don't like is the design on the lid. it is the same as the US. statehood quarter for New York.

Compass top of the line
I am a Vietnam vet and I have never in my life time seen a more handsome compass. Its very accurate and extreme easy to read and use. The case is made out of medal and very decorative on the out side with the statue of liberty and the year of its birth. To open push the stem and pops open, can;t say enough good things about it.very worth what I paid for it
