Justine Kurland: Girl Pictures

Girl Pictures is a magnificent achievement in photography
Justine Kurland's "Girl Pictures" is among the very best photo books to come out in recent years. The pictures are beautiful while also being moving and thought-provoking. That the subjects of the pictures are now in their mid to late 30s is not something that should be overlooked. They are now older than Kurland was when she photographed them.In a manner similar to the film "Portrait of a Lady on Fire," women dominate the frames. Boys occasionally make an appearance, but women are the dominant force here, both in front of and behind the camera. In that way, these pictures are well-suited to this moment. Men (white men in particular) are still the dominant force in American society, but they are being increasingly challenged by the presence and achievements of women. Kurland's pictures show glimpses of worlds where girls and women exist either free of the presence of boys and men, or where they hold the upper hand. Being able to see this in visual form makes it more possible for it to become a reality. My only critique of the book is that a majority of the plates are guttered (which means that they extend across two pages). I understand that this was likely for cost reasons, and perhaps for design ones as well.Girl Pictures is a masterwork by one of our most important contemporary photographers. Get it while you can.
