The last light bulb you'll ever buy
Why spend so much on a light bulb? There are some major advantages to buying one of these lights that are detailed below.Color Warmth: Compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs often cast a rather sickly glow. They can feel cold and uncomfortable. I work in an office where a number of my colleagues choose to sit in the dark rather than work under the standard CFL tubes. No doubt we've gotten used to this since CFL bulbs have become the norm over the past couple of years. When you turn on a Switch, you will be transported back to a time when light bulbs emitted a soft golden glow. The experience is actually nostalgic, believe it or not. What's more, the Switch improves greatly on other LED lights which can emit a very stark light and do so in only one direction. The Switch casts soft light in all directions and offers a bulb without compromise. This is what a bulb is supposed to look like!Longevity: If someone was to install a Switch on the day his or her child was born, he or she wouldn't have to change the bulb until the kid had graduated from college (based on the predicted life span of 22.8 years printed on the back of the Switch box). This ia simply a game changer in the world of lighting. This is a light bulb that could last longer than your lamp. This is especially helpful if you have a light fixture that is a pain to gain access to like in a ceiling lamp.Safety: If a CFL breaks, it's almost like having to deal with a haz mat spill. Just look up the recommended way for cleaning up a broken CFL online. Mercury is seriously toxic, and even if your CFL doesn't break, it still may end up in a landfill where the mercury could poison the ground water. A Switch, on the other hand, does not contain mercury. It uses food-grade silicone. If it breaks, there is no need for panic. Yes, you're out some money, but your health will not be at risk.Low Operating Temperature: Some people think LEDs don't give off heat. In fact they do...quite a bit. Switch bulbs are the first UL-listed bulbs that are liquid cooled. This means you can put them into enclosed lighting fixtures without worrying about overheating. The silicone dissipates the heat so that they can stay cool. Try touching an incandescent bulb after it's been on for 30 seconds. Then touch the Switch. You'll know the difference immediately. Additionally, most LED bulbs have trouble working in very hot environments. The Switch can operate in temperatures up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. This means you can install one outside and not worry about whether it will overheat (unless, maybe, you live in Death Valley). No Warm-up Time: If you use CFL bulbs, you know that they start out pretty dim when you first turn them on. It may take up to a minute before they reach peak luminosity. In contrast, the Switch bulbs light up immediately. In fact, I've detected the bulb being a little brighter for the first half-second that the bulb is on. Then it returns to it's normal light level. It Just Looks Cool: You might have seen a Switch and thought that it looks bulky and would seem out of place in your home. I thought that too, but honestly, the metal base pretty much disappears even in fixtures where the light bulb is clearly exposed like in inverted bathroom fixtures. Even if you could see it, it would still look cool. Reviewers have described it as having an art deco look, and I can definitely attest to the fact that it looks great when installed. The Bottom Line: Yes, this is a lot to spend on a light bulb. Switch is slated to be releasing more cost-efficient light bulbs called Afinia bulbs later in the summer of 2013. Even so, I'm certain that you won't be disappointed in buying this bulb. I've already started to replace all the bulbs in my house. Not all of us can be early adopters of fantastic new inventions, but this is one situation where almost all of us can be. Plus, this light bulb will likely be the last one you ever buy.

one of these purchased at brick and mortar store is still going strong - this one is failing prematurely
Mine didn't last as long as advertised. (Packaging, which I saved, states it should last 22.8 years based on 3 hours per day.) Perhaps a reason the manufacturer is now out of business.Although I saved the packaging and I know when I ordered, I didn't make a note as to the exact date installed. Best guess would be early 2017 or late 2016, and so it hasn't lasted much more than six months. WAY off from the advertised estimate.Another bulb of the exact same brand and type (and part number) purchased years prior is still going strong with continual/24-hour use. That's why I bought this identical bulb--as potential replacement when needed. But I had a sense I should try using it sooner than later in another fixture, given that some of the other customers' experiences with various SWITCH products, according to reviews here, are iffy. Both of my installations are enclosed indoor fixtures. (The one that is failing was seeing only about 6 hours per day of use, max.--not round the clock.)Since the product is no longer available, one might think this is all moot. But I also purchased the 40-watt version, SWITCH Lighting A21081FA1-R Classic A19 LED Light Bulb with 40-Watt Replacement and Frosted Lens, Soft White (2700K) . Haven't installed yet. It's still for sale at Amazon and has risen a couple bucks in price compared to what I paid nine months ago, evidently because these are becoming scarcer. My concern is it also may not hold up.Consider yourself warned as to the likely longevity of the 40-watt version, which is the main purpose of this review. I'm not holding my breath regarding the one I bought of that--whenever I will ultimately decide to install--based on my unsatisfactory experience with the 60-watt purchased here.A couple days ago, the 60-watt purchased here quit except for a very faint glow, the equivalent to one of those tiny LED handheld lights you squeeze but is about to run out of battery power, on its very last legs. Hardly worth flipping on the switch at that point, as mine put out no useful level of lighting. I kept trying to use the bulb anyway, and over the next day or so the failing 60-watt began to 're-brighten' to about the equivalent of maybe 15 watts. In any case, this one no longer puts out 60 watts, and does not seem long for this world.2017-7-17 UPDATE: Later on the day I posted this review, the bulb 'miraculously' re-brightened itself to 60 watts and stayed that way. It stayed that way whenever used on the next day, as well. But today, the bulb went back to super-dim and flickering. Had me thinking a miracle had happened, for a moment there, like the bulb had 'healed' itself. Nope. No miracles.

Awful customer service, bulbs died prematurely.
Bulbs were problematic from the beginning. They are supposed to work in enclosed light fixtures. Within a month, the oily silicone-cooling gel began to leak out of the bulb. I sent an e-mail to Switch customer service and they said they would replace the bulb; but then follow-on e-mails never responded to. Tried repeatedly to get a response from customer service but nothing. About 3 years later, one of the bulbs is dead: gel completed leaked out and pool of it sitting in enclosure. And I paid list price for these bulbs $50 !

Not 100% satisfied with the color
Maybe these are technically 2700K and test to that in a lab, but in my house they seem to be noticeably cooler in color than say the phillips 2700k LEDs.The idea behind these bulbs is great for enclosed areas. I hope they continue to improve the color.2014 edit: I ended up placing these in the kitchen right above a cooktop and in this setting, they've worked well. Should have updated sooner. Bumped up the stars from 2 to 4 as they've lasted well and it was just a matter of finding the right place for them being I'm picky about lighting color.

and as such it works great. I've been using it with a dimmer switch ...
I got this for the look, and as such it works great. I've been using it with a dimmer switch for a year now and it still works great. Very heavy so it may be an issue in a sideways lamp. Great, warm light.

Recommended for enclosed fixtures but very heavy.
This is one of only a handful of LED bulbs that are recommended for enclosed lighting. The only other one I would trust is the TCP Elite LED A19 60W (not Omni). The Switch is about the size of an incandescent bulb. It is VERY heavy. Maybe 5-10 times as heavy as a regular bulb. It reaches full brightness immediately and the brightness looks the same as an equivalent incandescent. I've only had it for a month so I can't comment on its longevity. It looks like Switch may be out of business so good luck with the warranty.
