Chick Corea - "The Leprechaun"
There is no doubt that Chick Corea is a monster keyboardist/pianist and this album is just one of many great ones he has released over his incredible career. It took me a few listens to get into this particular collection. Sometimes this genre of music goes over my head and it takes me a while to grasp it. But if you are looking for something different to listen to ... Corea's "The Leprechaun" is excellent. This is a great example of what happens when human beings get together to perform music (minus a computer).

The MP3 version cuts Leprechaun's Dream in half! Buyer beware!!
The music gets more stars than what is available, however DO NOT BUY the MP3 version of The Leprechaun. They cut Leprechaun's Dream in HALF. You only get the first HALF of the song!!!

Disappointed and very upset
The cd was not complete. Half of the very last track (track 8 Leprechaun's Dream) was missing .Extremely disappointing. Can it be rectified or redownloaded correctly?

MP3 album MISSING a song
Beware - the MP3 album of "The Leprechaun" is missing the last song! Actually, it's the second half of the last song ("Leprechaun's Dream, Part 2"). Not there. Amazon has said they will investigate the problem, but we'll see if they ever get around to fixing this. They were gracious enough to refund my money, but I'd rather have the missing track!

Classic Chick on Par w/ Return To Forever
Anyone who claims this isn't as good as the stellar RTF lineup featuring Stanley Clark, Lenny White, etc. is missing the point--this is a more personal vision of Chick's and he got the people who he was the closest to in order to fulfill that vision. Eddie Gomez has tact and poise on bass, and plays acoustic bass with incredible aplomb. Steve Gadd lays down some of his all-time best drumming and arguably his best song with Night Sprite. The entire album sounds like part-jazz, part classical, and part-rock. It is really the funky side of rock. This is a jazz-rock staple. If you're a drummer you should listen to The Leprechaun because this was one of the albums that put Steve Gadd on the map. The vocal stylings of Gayle Moran is not my favorite portion of the album however she still puts a nice mystical quality to the proceedings, and this is precisely what Chick intended. The main reason why a few people rate this album under 5 stars is because they want a different side of Chick to play. Some are into the later Return to Forever outings--but this band is actually the original RTF lineup in many ways! It features classical instruments rather than the electric guitar, though. You don't have to prove your loyalty to a different style of Chick(he has so many!) by downgrading this recording. Try to hear it on its own merits--that of a concept jazz-rock-fantasy piece--and you should be richly rewarded. Plus this is the first of a few incredible recordings with the same rhythm section--also suggested is My Spanish Heart.

Magic from the master!
I first heard this recording on vinyl some years ago when a drummer friend of mine brought it over to my house along with The Mahavishnu Orchestra's BETWEEN NOTHINGNESS & ETERNITY. Both recordings solidified my love for jazz fusion. I bought a copy of both for myself on CD some years later. There is so much to offer in this classic CD. "Imp's Welcome" sounds like music for "The Arabian Nights". "Lenore" features more excellent work from Corea and his wife Gayle Moran. "Reverie" bleeds into "Looking At The World" a summation of the central character's view of things. "Night Sprite" features Corea, Joe Farrell, and Steve Gadd in rare form. "Soft And Gentle" is the ballad for the leprechaun to his love. "Pixiland Rag" is a re-working of Corea's "Children's Song #9". The central piece is "Leprechaun's Dream" which shows Chick's mastery of orchestral writing. This is the first of the trilogy of CD's from Chick ending with 1978's THE MAD HATTER.

Caldamente consigliato.
