Does the job, makes good coffee
Every morning at work, I made a fresh large pot of coffee in the traditional coffeemaker. When I came back to get a cup ten minutes later, the dudes in my department had taken the entire thing. The WHOLE thing. Every day. So I decided to get something that wouldn't run out. I usually fill it about half full. Do NOT use any sort of filter! You don't need it and it will not work at all with a filter. As the directions say, if the coffee seems to sift out of the basket, just wet the basket before adding the ground coffee. One thing I really like about this appliance is that it keeps coffee a bit hotter than glass carafes.

West Bend 33600 100-Cup Commercial Coffee Urn - AND MORE
I bought this coffee urn several weeks ago and have used it every week since...for TEA! I drink a lot of tea, all kinds of tea really, but mostly black, and it has to be FRESH brewed. I used to make tea every 1-2 days using one of those lightweight plastic brewers, which works fine too, it just couldn't keep up with my demand & I was getting really sick & tired of making it so often. Now I make it just once a week on weekends, 2.5 gallons at a time. I had researched a bunch of different kinds of commercial type tea brewers, but for some reason they seem to run in the $200-600 range. I've made a lot of tea in my regular coffee pot too, so I started looking at these large coffee brewers as a possible alternative. I figured for the price, it would be worth a try. So far, I absolutely love this thing! So easy to use, so easy to clean! If tea would stay fresh for 2 weeks at a time, I'd make 5 gallons instead. I bought a 2.5 gallon plastic water jug (rectangle gas can shape) with a spigot from Walmart for a few bucks, fill it up once the fresh brewed tea cools down, and store it in on the top shelf of my fridge. It's a miracle. So the point of this long review is really to brag about this thing as a cost-effective tea maker, as it's already proven to be an incredible coffee maker. I've also got a half-dozen other uses in mind for it! Zero complaints. SPECIAL NOTE: If you plan on using this machine to make tea (or coffee for that matter), you MUST keep in mind that the "cup" marks on the side of the urn indicate the philosophical international "standard" (it's complicated) fluid ounces for a cup of coffee (roughly 5.5oz), NOT the U.S. standard of 8 fluid oz. in a cup. So that's roughly 100 5.5oz cups of coffee. When you brew tea with tea bags, their measurements are 8oz. per cup as a serving. 320oz in 2.5 gallons is 40 servings at 8oz./cup. The family size tea bags I use brew 4 8oz. cups per bag, so I need 10 bags for 320oz. Just saving you the trouble...

Perfect for small office, small parties, or family gatherings
To start off, we've used these similar ones for family gatherings as far as I can remember and they are so convenient and great time savers. I've used it for coffee as suggested and have not had any problems with my unit. It works exactly as expected. I use it most often for tea. I just put the tea bags on the built in coffee filter and it makes great tea. It warns against other liquids besides water and coffee to be made in this unit. However, I've seen tea made in similar perks for over 20 years and haven't seen any issues, nor have I had an issue with mine. I've also read a of reviewers trying to brew hot chocolate in these and running into problems. I wouldn't recommend experimenting with liquids thicker than coffee, tea or water, or with sugary items (since sugar tends to heat to very high temperatures). I don't see any reason that you couldn't heat up just water then add hot chocolate mix to the perk, but this isn't a recommendation by me to do so. I add regular milk and sometimes evaporated milk after the brew is complete when I make tea but not during the brew. The 12-30 cups is a wide estimate. If you're looking for a realistic 20-30 cups out of this unit you wont get it with one shot. If you make 8-10 oz , you'll get 7-10 cups, maybe 12 cups.

Makes EXTREMELY hot coffee!!
I just got this 3 days ago and have made 3 pots of coffee so far. I burnt my tongue on the very first sip of coffee because it was so hot. It takes about 30 minutes for my large mug of coffee to cool down until I can drink it safely without burning my tongue. I really like the percolator because it keeps recirculating the water over the grounds making the coffee stronger while using less actual coffee grounds. You know when the coffee is done because it stops percolating. There is a groove on the bottom of the inside of the percolator so if any grounds get through the basket, they will settle in this section and won't pour out the spout. It keeps the coffee extremely hot as long as you have it plugged in and coffee in it. It doesn't burn the coffee like a regular coffee maker will do. I would of given it a 5 rating but the lid does not lock in place as described on Amazon's page. It just turns into a slot and can easily come off and if tipped over, it will still leak even with the lid in place. The lid is also not heat resistant as described on the Amazon page. The lid is just plastic and the coffee is percolated up against it so when the coffee is hot, the lid gets hot. If you accidentally knock it over, DON'T try to grab it because you will burn yourself since the only spot that doesn't get hot is the base. Even the plastic handles get pretty warm. The spout works really well but since it is really low, you have to slide the percolator close to the edge of the counter to get a large cup under the spout. This may be hard to do because the plug cord is somewhat short so you need a electrical outlet close to where you want to pour your coffee. It is just long enough to do this on a standard kitchen counter (from the back edge of the counter to the front edge of the counter). However, doing this, you truly take a chance of knocking it over onto yourself and having extremely hot coffee leaking out on you since the lid does not lock into place and still leaks even when in place and tipped over! 3 things would truly make this a GREAT percolator: 1. give it taller legs so you can get large coffee mugs under the spout without having to slide the percolator close to the edge of the counter. 2. Actually make the lid lock with some kind of stop so it clicks into place. 3. Make the lid insulated so it doesn't get hot from the coffee percolating up against it. You can't make it truly spill proof because the heat and steam would build up inside and make the lid explode off unless you make some kind of pressure release in the lid. I would still recommend this percolator because I really do like it, but I would also warm people of the hazards of it being extremely hot.

Stick with those items as well as people that have proven themselves.
Our very old West Bend 30 cup urn gave up the ghost after temporary employee submerged it in a sink full of dishwater. Yes it was unplugged. Another brand was ordered without my permission. That unit could not brew 1 cup of coffee. So I ordered a new 30 cup West Bend urn and we now have perfect coffee every day.

Huge LEAK on first use! Nice coffee STAINS ON CARPET!
We got this for our team event. On its very first use, it started leaking profusely when the coffee was getting hot. It stained the carpet very nicely - not! So if you have light-colored carpet, beware of this West Bend coffee urn. Luckily one of the parents saw the leak and notified us before the whole pot (100 cups) would empty out on the floor. The see-through coffee gauge tube was not properly installed by West Bend and sprung a big leak at the base of the gauge tube - Look at the nice stream of coffee in attached picture. That was BAD DESIGN and BAD QA! We should have believed the reviews going back to 2015 with similar problems. It seems that West Bend hasn't figured out how to fix the problem or they don't care enough about the 10% of the reviews being 1-star. So take your chances folks, maybe 1 in 10 customers may get lucky and end up with a $100 carpet stainer or luckier yet get a trip to to the hospital for burns. Gee-whiz!!! Another BAD DESIGN: the spigot is directly above the on/off switches so there's a chance someone may be burned and get electrical shock trying to turn it off while all that hot liquid spills onto the hand! We were lucky no one was burned or electrocuted! SUMMARY: this urn can stain carpet, burn your hands, may give you an electrical shock, squirt coffee on your nice cloths but it doesn't make coffee! We will STAY AWAY from this West Bend model. We want enjoy coffee not mopping the floor or staining the carpet! Needless today, we are returning this West Bend carpet stainer!

Very Good for large Groups
I bought this to handle up to 60 folks for breakfast and it is better quality than expected. It made excellent tasting coffee. 50 cups made in 20 mins. Easy to clean. (I used coffee filter Bags to insure no grounds in coffee…. don’t know if the basket alone would result in grounds or not.) We also bought the smaller, simpler WestBend percolator to use for De-cafe coffee….and it was VERY FAST and made excellent coffee…. Don’t know why this review-process won’t allow me to offer individual reviews of the products.

Great pot for groups.
I wanted a medium sized pot for serving mulled cider or wine for parties. I used a crock pot last time and it was not as easy when I had a group sized coffee pot to put it in. So I bought this to have it ready for the next group party we go to. I can't respond to how well it makes coffee because I do not plan to use it for that. 30 cups is just the right size for what I needed.

Is reliable and makes a lot of coffee or hot water
Haven’t used this one yet... but bought two used off Craigslist and after making lots of coffee for work, it started to not work as well (turns on/off).. I’m pretty sure it’s just the electrical cable that needs to be looked at. Been meaning to buy another anyway in case one craps out. I use one for hot water and one for coffee.. I think when I unscrew the bottom, I’ll be able to secure the cable, and probably never use this one. Secret to making good coffee is finding the right grounds... and for some reason mounding the grounds towards the center makes a difference. Also, when the light turns off, take the grounds out.. careful hot and drips coffee. This will keep the coffee from cooking and keep it fresh. Makes coffee is about an hour to hour 30mins depending on the number of cups. Pretty durable. I keep my coffee in a Starbucks cambro. Keep hot water plugged in in this.

better than others
this was for my work, we have had several through the years, they usually leak or something breaks on them, we have had this for over a year of daily use (I waited to do the review), and it has held up well. It is easy to clean, no issues, a great purchase and fair price.
